The Rogue Witch(117)
Author: Chandelle LaVaun

Tegan jumped to her feet. Rainbow mist coiled around her hands. Her black and purple hair whipped around behind her. I couldn’t see her face but I didn’t need to. She felt it too.

Tennessee stood up beside her. One by one, each Bishop was on their feet. The energy moved like a wave and each time it hit someone they flinched and hopped up.

“What is that?” Savannah whispered beside me. In my peripheral vision I saw her looking around in a panic. “What is it? I feel something but—”

A ripple sliced through the perfectly flat turquoise ocean water. It’d been flat like ice all day. I pushed myself up to my feet, then brushed the sand off my hands. It was something, for sure…but what? It was probably just demons coming for another round. I heard the sound of metal as my Coven-mates drew their weapons.

A wave taller than me shot up twenty feet off the shore. It rushed forward, moving faster than I’d ever seen a wave move. The water turned jet back. Bright orange and red flames blazed from within the wave. The water turned thick and gray, with red and orange molten lava— it’s lava! Each time the lava hit the ocean water it hissed and white smoke billowed into the air. The lava cracked and hissed as it hit the sandy shore. Thick gray and white smoke poured out.

Fire burned a vertical line in the sky from the wave going up. It flashed and flickered, then the fire split apart like flames eating parchment until it left a black hole. Except it wasn’t a black hole, this was uneven and misshapen. A black night sky twinkled with stars. It was like someone had cut a hole in the blue sky.

A figure stepped into the hole, filling the space but cast in shadow. The smoke surrounding them was filled with fire. Behind them, a ball of fire shot across the night sky. I tried to look but all I saw was smoke and flames. The figure walked forward, moving out of the hole and I saw broad, muscular shoulders and a long body. It was definitely a man, except every inch of his body was black and gray like he’d been burned. He stalked toward us like he was walking on solid ground, like there wasn’t fire and brimstone in his wake.

Streaks of burning orange fire covered his blackened torso.

In the corner of my eye, I saw several of my Coven-mates lift their swords up.

My pulse was flying. My stomach tight in knots.

The man kept walking.

The second his feet hit the white powdery sand, slivers of black and gray chipped off of his body until he looked completely normal. Human. His skin was tanned, or maybe he was just grimy and ashy. He was shirtless, wearing only low slung black pants and black boots. His upper body was chiseled tight like a sculpture. Lean, sharp cut muscles covered his arms and shoulders. The ash on his skin made the ripple of deep-cut abs more pronounced.

Fire scorched like bolts of lightning across his skin, moving over his body in random places but not staying there.

The lava, smoke, and fire receded back into the hole faster than it appeared.

“What are we bloody lookin’ at here, lads?”

“Anyone know who this is?” Easton whisper shouted.

The guy looked up and all I saw were crescent moons made of fire around his pupils.

He was still walking toward us but everything seemed to be in slow motion. With every step he looked more and more human. Dark hair fell in wild, dark waves over his shoulders. There was something about the high cut of his cheekbones and the sharp angle of his jawline—

“Oh my God,” Tegan breathed. “Bentley?”

I gasped.

He stopped in place and held up his left arm.

The black V Hierophant’s Mark was a stark contrast to his fair skin. He looked up with eyes that shined that bright, brilliant, familiar gold. “Yeah, it’s me.”

BUT FIRST, I’ve got a stand-alone story about two characters who will be important later in The Coven Saga. Read below to find out about Chloe Lancaster and Malachi in The Rose Witch.

His magic lurks in the shadows…

I feel his eyes on my back with every step I take. He’s following me. Chasing me. There’s nowhere for me to go, nowhere to hide that he won’t find me. He moves in smoke and shadows. He is the darkness. He tracks my every move like a predator with gold glowing eyes in the night. I know he’s going to catch me, the only question is…why do I want him to?

I have no idea who he is or what he wants. I know I should be terrified…but I’m not.

There are things happening to me…things I can’t control or explain…things that only I can see. Magic pours from me like a scarlet river and this locket around my neck pulses with dark, electric energy. I think it’s what he wants…but he isn’t the only thing on the hunt for it. Demons hide around every corner, they attack mercilessly and relentlessly - the only thing they seem to be afraid of is him.

That should be a warning, except there’s something inside me that begs to be near him. I feel it like a magnet, drawing me closer and I’m running out of reasons to fight it.

He is the Prince of Hell…and he’s either my savior or my damnation…

The Rose Witch is a novel set in The Coven saga but is designed to be read as a stand-alone.

I thought magic was make believe...but I was way wrong.

I was nobody. No matter how hard I tried, I never fit in with anyone at my high school. Now I know why.

Turns out I'm a witch. A scary powerful one, too. Except The Coven that claimed me won't teach me how to use my magic.

Suddenly, I'm selected by the Goddess to hunt down a mythical locket needed to save the world from destruction. The only person who actually tries to help me is the alarmingly attractive Tennessee. He has immeasurable power and breathtaking mismatched eyes. I'm drawn to him on a level I can't explain...and he's forbidden from getting too close to me.

When the quest takes an unexpected dangerous turn, I have to improvise. This supernatural world is unraveling at my fingertips and I need to master my magic fast. If I don't, I could get everyone I care about killed...
