Laughing, I pulled him to me, squeezing the living crap out of him.
Dad laughed too, returning the hug like he never wanted to let me go. My jaw tensed as the horrible memories of losing him began to evaporate with his arms around me, leaving beautiful memories in my heart and mind instead.
Only the good ones.
The last piece of my heart, torn so long ago, healed after seeing my father again. He was happy. At peace. With my mother, and the people he’d called his family at his side.
Kissing my temple, he stepped back to cup my face and see me clearly, pride and love illuminating his features. “I never doubted you for a second, Brax. Not a single, fucking one.” Dad hugged me once more, enjoying every second of our reunion. “My son… the king. Holy shit.”
We began to chuckle, but a sudden prickling sensation captured my being. I pulled away, eyes snapping to my torso to find magic rushing along my ribs and towards my back. Every swirling, golden particle overcame a part of my disfigured skin—the scar I’d suffered when mom ran with me through a wall of Dragon Fire to save my life.
A gasp left Dad and I as the scar I’d carried my entire life vanished before our eyes, taken away by his healing and my Devenish magic…
It had already served its purpose.
Tears brimming in her eyes, Mom hugged us both, our joined embrace making joy flow through our souls.
Now only the brightest future awaited us all.
A whole damn desert of happiness.
