“I don’t know, Jo,” I said quietly and hang up. The next fifteen minutes were spent so restlessly until Jake finally came barreling into my office. He was just as good looking as he had been a month ago. He was dressed impeccably in a black suit, loosened tie and hair, a windblown mess. He looked perfect and you wouldn’t know that he was anything but fine except when you looked into those eyes. They express everything his lips don’t.
“Emma.” He said and I turned away. I had missed his voice. I felt him come closer. Before he could say anything else, I took off without looking at him. And I didn’t go to work for the rest of the week. Neither did I answer the doorbell which rung a thousand times. Jo called me and cursed at me for an hour for ruining my life and not giving Jake a chance this time. But he didn’t know just how badly I was hurt and my pain which had turned to anger kept my resistance firm.
For the next month, Jake worked hard for my forgiveness for ditching me the way he had and started following me everywhere, at work, he waited all day but I always claimed to be busy. At home, he always waited outside for me to buzz him in. I didn’t. He sent me expensive gifts and flowers and everything a girl could dream of until he stopped and I finally gave in. He needed to know that things would not soften me towards him. What we had wasn’t materialistic, it was realistic. He knocked on my office door and this time I stayed only closing my eyes.
“Look at me, please. I have gone too long without seeing those pretty eyes.” He said.
“Why are you here, Jake?” I ask, stiffly. “What do you want?”
“I’m here to make you mine.” He said softly. “Joseph told me everything. Why didn’t you, Emma? Why did you make me suffer knowing all this time that I was free to claim your heart?”
“Because you never gave me a chance!” I burst out. “I tried to tell you but you shut me up. And then you left me like a coldhearted bastard.” My throat closed up and I swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry, Emma. I’m so sorry.” He said taking my hand. “I didn’t know and I was too tortured by the thought that I’d lost you already. And the next morning, even though I loved you and didn’t want anything more than to hold you close, I loathed myself for what I had done to my brother. And I couldn’t bear the thought of you walking away from me only to go into my brother’s arms. So like a coward, I ran.” His hands wiped the tears off my cheeks. “And I kept running until I couldn’t do it anymore. Because missing you was killing me and I came back to tell Joseph that I loved you. Joseph said that you wanted me to fight for you. For us. Well, here I am. And I’m not going anywhere. Please forgive me.” He pleaded.
I resisted all of fifty-five seconds before I gave in and wrapped my arms around him. I spied Nancy looking in from the open office door giving me a silly grin and a thumbs up in approval. Jake pulled me to my feet and dipped me down Hollywood style, laying a kiss across my lips. And finally, after all the waiting and screams and fights and pain, my prince charming had arrived.
Jake proposed to me that very evening and when I asked him if he wanted to date me first, all he said was, “I’ll date you after you become Mrs. Jake Vandervaal.”
And I couldn’t be happier.
