A Bird in the Oven(33)
Author: Kata Cuic

“If it will soothe your anxiety, we can schedule an appointment with a specialist to determine your fertility.”

I’m still not completely giving in to the hope of keeping Ollie. I can’t bear to be also told I’m chasing a pipe dream of having my own baby. “Christmas?”

“Christmas,” he affirms. “I will stuff your stocking by Christmas.”

It’s not putting a bird in my oven, but I cling to his offer anyway. “How did you get so good at weird analogies?”

He peels me away from his chest to kiss me in ways that leave me senseless. After we break for necessary oxygen, he whispers against my lips. “I learned from the best. You question everything, and I have studied your curiosity tirelessly.”

“I’m bleeding like an animal that won’t die, my stomach hurts, and I want chocolate,” I admit. “Are you willing to study me tirelessly now?”

He smiles, a full-toothed grin that is so devastatingly sexy. “Yes. One-hundred and ten percent, yes.”

“One hundred and ten percent isn’t a rational number.”

“My love for you has never been rational,” he says. Then, he kisses me again.

I am madly in love with irrationally logical.

About the Author

Kata Čuić lives in Pittsburgh, PA with her husband and three teens. No one told her life was gonna be this way. She holds a degree in Linguistics with a minor in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. Her plans of becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon were foiled by OChem 1. Fortunately, she’d been making up stories in her head since the days of her imaginary friend, Choosy. Putting pen to paper, er—fingers to the keyboard—came surprisingly naturally after her aforementioned teens decided it was time for them to cut their respective cords.

Kata writes everything from angst-filled series with hot football jocks to standalone rom-coms with hot band geeks and has been known to dabble in a bit of paranormal on the free stories section of her website. She believes nice guys shouldn’t have to finish last (except in the bedroom where she prefers an alpha between the sheets but a gentleman in the streets), and that the surest way to a woman’s heart is through laughter and food.

She thought it would be a super fun idea to level up for NaNoWriMo this year by not only writing an entire novel but also challenging herself to publish it before her favorite holiday—Thanksgiving. She frequently does things like this to herself then continues to question why she is the way that she is. You can follow her on social media if you enjoy laughing at those sorts of train wrecks in the making. She will provide the cocktails if you bring the snacks.
