I’d always been drawn to the crazy ones. Not that it ever worked in my favour. I’d been run off the road by an ex, had my shit dumped in the street out of a window in a high-rise apartment. Once, a girl even stalked me at work then came at me with knife as I was closing up. An old friend once said that the crazy in them, saw an ally in me and it was fate. But as I looked at Matt now, I wondered if that comment had been more than just a friendly teenage jab.
That year back in high school, it seemed like we were brothers. Always egging each other on, getting into trouble and reveling in it. I confided in him and thought that he would have my back when I needed him most, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Because when push came to shove, Matt Harris had thrown me under the bus without a second glance.
“This wasn’t exactly how we planned our year together to start but now that we’re all here, why don’t we sit and chat?” Christy began, referring to the clause in our father’s will that stipulated how we needed to live together for a year, in order to claim our inheritance. Christy was typically an expert at throwing people off their game. Although, the fake pleasantries that were oozing out of her sickly-sweet smile, didn’t seem to be having their desired effect this time.
Matt’s face was getting redder, his anger beginning to boil over. “Perhaps you didn’t hear me right the first time, Christy. We are not staying here.” He growled.
“Well, of course YOU aren’t staying Matthew, but I know Carly is.” Christy answered.
“Just a second.” Bryanna’s voice boomed across the room as her palms flew up in the air. “Nothing is happening until I get an answer out of my supposed best friend!”
While I would have preferred to watch Bryanna’s tight little ass jiggle in her Lululemons, this family did have issues to address. Reluctantly, I turned my gaze to Carly and watched as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“I’m so sorry Bry…I was avoiding you because…well, I didn’t know how to tell you that I was…”
“You need to spit it out Carly. I’m at the end of my rope here. First you tell me that you you’re having some random hookup, which is fine, but then it turns into some long-convoluted story about…well about him.” Bry said as she glanced quickly in Matt’s direction.” Then eventually you call and ask me to keep your cat for months on end because you aren’t returning home! You ignore my texts and calls then finally I get an anonymous voicemail that says you won’t be back for over a year! I nearly called the cops for fuck’s sake! It’s only because of Christy that I didn’t!”
“Christy? You spoke to Christy?” Carly spoke slowly and quietly, as if each word caused her great pain. I watched as her eyes narrowed into tiny slits and her fists ball up in anger.
My gaze flipped back to Bryanna who had pulled her herself up straight and crossed her arms across her chest, giving me a much better idea of what was underneath.
“I sure did Carly. And you’d be amazed at the things she told me.” A little smirk seeped across Bryanna’s face as she sat into her hip, thrusting it out in my direction.
Yeah…this girl was about to make the Roberts family reunion much more interesting.
