Angels In The City(52)
Author: Garrett Leigh

“I am not.”

“Sure about that? You disappeared for a moment.”

“I did not mean to. I am right here.” Sacha found Jonah’s lips and kissed him deeply. “You know you have been an angel for me, don’t you?”

Jonah cupped Sacha’s face, his thumb stroking Sacha’s cheekbone. “You have for me too. I don’t think I have ever felt more myself than I do with you.”

“I do love you, Jonah Gray. I don’t know what that means, or where it will take us, but I feel it here.” Sacha brought Jonah’s other hand to his chest, pressing it tight so he could feel Sacha’s stampeding heart.

Jonah’s answering smile matched the sunshine he’d always been for Sacha. “It means everything, Sacha, because I love you too.”

EXCERPT: Hometown Christmas:

Yani sensed Gavin’s gaze on him as he arranged the sausage rolls on the plate. He poked his tongue out. “Sometimes I do it for fun, okay? Stop eyeballing me.”

Gavin popped the tab on a can of Fosters. It was the first time Yani had seen him drink since he’d confessed it was his favourite coping mechanism, and it was Yani’s turn to stare. After a moment, Gavin rolled his eyes and shrugged. “Okay okay, I get it. If it’s all right for me to drink when I’m happy, then you can play Jenga with meat and greasy pastry.”

“You’re obsessed with Jenga. Get some new jokes.”

“Do something different then.” Gavin swiped a sausage roll from the top of Yani’s stack. It left an uneven number and Yani glared, but it was fleeting. OCD was losing the day to the sheer joy of seeing Gavin interact with his family—his parents Dawn and Nial, brothers, sisters, and a dozen nieces and nephews. The house was crowded, noisy, and full of life. Yani could tell Gavin didn’t feel quite at home, but Yani did. For a moment, he missed his own rowdy family, but the pull to Gavin was too strong in his chest. There’s nowhere I’d rather be.

He even understood why Gavin hadn’t told him where they were going before they’d arrived. How many times had he done the same thing to Bex? Led her down the garden path so no one, not even her, would know he’d backed out at the last minute?

They took the sausage rolls into the living room. A toddler climbed up Gavin’s legs and he swung her onto his shoulders. She wrapped her arms around his neck as though she did it every day, but her mother caught her. “Careful, Gracie. You know Uncle G has a bad neck.”

Gavin scowled. “Hayley, it’s fine. It was years ago.”

The conversation moved on, and the toddler stood her ground, but curiosity started a slow, demanding tattoo in Yani’s soul. He knew little about the accident that had ended Gavin’s military career, or about Gavin’s army life at all. For the longest time, he’d convinced himself that he was okay with that, but the deeper his feelings for Gavin grew, the harder it become to believe. I want to know everything about him.

At least, everything Gavin wanted to share.

The evening passed in a haze of sausage rolls, Doritos, and cheap lager. Gavin didn’t drink much while Yani got quietly sozzled in the corner with a bloke who seemed to be known as “Uncle Giant” to everyone in the house, from the adults to the smallest children.

“He’s all right, our Gavin is, you know,” Uncle said, when he caught Yani staring. “Sometimes I forget he was ever gone.”

“Gone?”

“Yeah. In the army and that. I never saw him for ten years when he was away, and then he didn’t want us around when he was in the hospital. Can’t say I blame him. We ain’t a quiet crowd.”

Yani smiled as he absorbed the revelations he knew would never come from Gavin. “Perhaps he doesn’t need quiet anymore.”

Uncle grunted and opened another can of Fosters. “Why would he? You can be quiet when you’re dead.”
