Six Years Later

“Bethany, will you hold Baxter on your hip, and Ellie, squeeze in next to Paisley. I promise this won’t take long, and then you can all run through the trees or head to the pastures.” I’m standing where my Eve can’t see me while she wrangles our four children for a Christmas card. This year, she set up more than the two photo-type booths the customers can use while they pick out their trees. Bethany is our oldest at the age of six, Ellie is five, Paisley is three, and Baxter is our youngest at nine months. After three girls, I told Eve we didn’t need to try for a fourth in order to see if we’d have a boy. She put her foot down though, that woman of mine, and said four was our plan all along, and if we had one or the other, it was fine with her, but she really wanted to try for a boy. Who was I to complain?

If I were a betting man, I’d say this card is going to come out a mess like it usually does. This is Eve’s tradition; I just somehow managed not to be around for this one.

“Momma, I think Bax just pooped.” Bethie sounds like she’s holding her nose. I don’t want to intrude just yet. If Eve isn’t done with pictures and I come around the corner, they’ll for sure never get done.

“Of course, the perfect opportunity, and he does,” Eve jokes.

“It really stinks,” Ellie jokes.

“Can we go play now?” That comes from Paisley. Getting her to do anything else besides playing takes an act of God and the patience of a saint. Hell, just this morning, she argued over why she should have to make her bed and brush her teeth.

“Yeah, your dad isn’t around anyway to finish the rest of them. Don’t forget this is our surprise for him.” Oh hell, if Eve knows that I’ve caught wind of this without telling her, I’ll be in for it. Though I gotta say, I love what she does to torture us both when I let her have her way.

I listen as the kids leave, well, except Baxter. “You can come out, you know. I heard you trying to silently chuckle the entire time.” Eve blows out a breath of air.

“I wasn’t getting in the middle of that. You want me to go change Baxter?” My arms go around the two of them.

“No, he didn’t even poop. That was Beth’s way of telling me she was done. Not that I blame her. And I think I got maybe one decent picture. The rest are what they are, still adorable as ever though. Why are you off so early? I thought you had a teleconference?” Eve’s head lies on my shoulder as we walk towards the house.

“I got done sooner than anticipated, figured I’d come take the kids off your hands for a bit. Let you go take a warm bath.” Last night, we must have reached for each other two or three times, lazily at first, then in a frenzy, and I know Eve is tender. My mouth woke her up this morning. Hell, just the other day, she did the same. Even after all these years, we’re still as passionate as ever. Of course, it probably helps that my parents and hers help with the kids when they can. Always telling us it’s their turn to spoil them, allowing us to have time for us.

“I can do that. Baxter is about ready to pass out, anyway. I’ll go on up and feed him, then put him down for his nap. Meet me in there?” Her face is upturned, the sun giving way to her beautiful eyes, smooth creamy skin, and lips that I want on mine.

“Yeah, I’ll see if Dad is running around to keep his eyes on the kids, and I’ll meet you afterwards. I love you, Eve.”

“I love you, Tyson. You and our crazy, full-of-energy, never-a-dull-moment, always-into-some-kind-of-mischief children too. More than anything in this world.” I bend down, my lips meeting hers. A slobbery fist meets my beard, causing me to chuckle against Eve’s lips and cutting our kiss short.

“We do have the best life, you know.”

“That we do,” she replies.

“Alright, get on up to the house.” I smack her ass when she turns to go, letting her know what will happen later on.

“I’ll be waiting.” That mischief she was talking about with our children, they definitely get that from their momma.

“I know you will. Now go on. The faster you get in there, the faster I’ll be in there with you.” That causes her to put some pep in her step. I shake my head, happier than ever with Eve and our children here on Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm.
