After a while, Caroline and I stood back, happy to just watch my family enjoying each other. She had her back pressed to my chest and my arms were draped around her shoulders. Quietly, my words lost to the others amongst their noise and celebration, I said near Caroline’s ear, “Someday, I’m gonna ask you that question.”
“I know,” she said. Then she tipped her head so she could look at my face. “And someday, I’m gonna say yes.”
