Twist of Fate (The Ghost Girl #2)(63)
Author: Sinclair Kelly

“I trust you, Mack,” she whispers.

Our gazes turn toward the ominous staircase that sits in the far corner of the dank basement as the doorknob creaks and the door at the top of the stairs opens. Fiery light filters in through the crack as the screams get louder. Liv quickly darts back into the darkest corner of her cell just as the clacking of heels on wood echoes through the space seconds before she comes into view on ridiculously high heels. She reaches the bottom with a sweep of her long green dress, and looks at me with an evil glint in her eyes.

“Well now, my pet. Let’s see what trouble we can get up to today, shall we? Why don’t you be a good little boy and show me just what that darkness of yours can do?”

THE END

About the Author

Sinclair Kelly is a paranormal & contemporary romance author who writes to give all of the feral characters in her head a voice. She’s fluent in sarcasm and dry humor. She lives in sunny Arizona with her loving husband, three adorably exhausting kids, and a cranky old chihuahua named Sam (aka SamBurger). She loves reading, writing, coffee, vodka, tattoos, wine, donuts, broody asshole book boyfriends, badass FMCs, wine, all of the friendships she’s made since she began beta reading for some totally incredible authors, and can’t forget wine!

Keeping reading for a sneak peak from Sin’s novella: If The Broom Fits

My phone tells me it’s three minutes to midnight. My favorite leather chair creaks as I sit, the crackling flames from the fireplace providing the only light in the room. My study is otherwise silent, an almost eerie sense of anticipation hanging in the air.

The book sits in my lap, taunting me with its promise of answers. Its cover is made from thick brown leather, the pages a light cream parchment that’s heavier than your average paper, with rough edges. There is no title, only a symbol embossed on the front. My finger traces the three circles laid out in a row, only slightly overlapping. It doesn’t look familiar, and the spine has only one word. Troglodytarum. Fairly sure that’s Latin, but I’ll have to run a quick translation when I’m done here. The possibility of learning something new satisfies my seemingly unending desire for knowledge. It’s the one thing I can control. The one thing that fills up the emptiness inside that nothing else has been able to fill. Research and books, especially the odd or unique ones, are kind of my thing, so unraveling its mystery should be no problem.

And this one is definitely a mystery. I mean, strange books don’t appear on your doorstep every day, wrapped in brown kraft paper with a small note tucked under the twine tied around the outside. It held no distinguishable postage marks or any other delivery labels. The note was carefully folded, and when opened, gave specific instructions written in small and precise penmanship.

Liam,

It is time. This book holds the key - one only you can access. Just before the clock strikes midnight, turn to the first page and read aloud the passage. If all goes well, you shall have the answers you’ve always sought.

Safe travels,

F

The letter makes no more sense after the tenth read than it did after the first, though there’s a thought niggling in the back of my mind. One that I try to ignore. One that says maybe this book can tell me about my past. The time that has always been unaccounted for, that I could never find the answers to.

Am I really going through with this? I ask myself, though the answer is obvious. Yes. Yes, I am! My curious soul just can’t help itself when it comes to a good puzzle.

Gingerly, I open the book to the first page, just like the note told me. With only one minute until the clock strikes midnight, I take a deep breath and begin to read out loud.

“Take me to the land of make-believe. A land of legends and fairy tales and nightmares…”

Before I even finish the last word, I’m struggling to stay awake. My eyelids feel heavy, and my limbs aren’t cooperating. The book falls to the floor as I tumble into darkness.

The glass hits the table with a satisfying clink as the burn makes its way down my throat. A small splash of amber liquid sloshes over the side, but I don’t even notice. My focus is on the book currently laying on my desk. The accompanying note sprawled on the floor next to it.

I don’t believe in this shit, and I definitely won’t have some mysterious stranger telling me what to do. Stalking over to the folded piece of paper, I snatch it up and angrily read it again. Maybe I hallucinated the whole damn crazy thing.
