He nodded. “For you and Brennan.” He swallowed hard. “Not for me. I have no need for such things. But for you, because I love you and your support makes my work possible. I couldn’t do this without you. You’ve never questioned the importance of what I do, and I want you to know how much I appreciate that.” He blinked back tears. “And for our son. A legacy for him, so in a few hundred years his name will still be remembered.”
Sliding the folder onto the table, I took Lawson’s face in my hands and kissed him. “I’m so honoured. Thank you. I never expected this. I’m . . . so honoured. My heart is so full right now. And I don’t think you need to worry about Brennan’s legacy. I’m pretty sure he’s gonna be saving butterflies when he grows up. You two will be working side by side for a long time.”
Lawson gave a teary laugh. “You think so?”
“I know so. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
He hugged me, his face buried in my neck. He nuzzled me for half a second before stopping. “Brennan’s asleep, yes?”
I chuckled. “He sure is.”
He pulled back and met my gaze. “I’ve been so busy and it feels like forever since we . . . since you . . .”
I kissed him softly. “Want me to remedy that, Doctor Brighton-Gale?”
“Immediately.” He took my hand and led me to our room, closing the door quietly behind us and snicking the lock shut. His eyes were full of fire and love. “Immediately and for as many times as you’re able.”
I pulled his sweater over his head and pushed him onto the bed. Crawling up his body, I left a trail of butterfly kisses over his skin. His quiet laugh became a moan. “Jack, I’m not a patient man.”
I laughed and, like I always had—and like I always would—gave him everything he wanted.
