Goodbye Guy (Cocky Hero Club)(81)
Author: Jodi Watters

“I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.”

“Me, too. But we’re not teenagers anymore.”

And love was stronger than hate.

“Doug said most parents mess up the first kid anyway. The second always turns out better.”

She laughed, her heart melting when the baby mewled. “I think Johnny’s pretty darn amazing.”

Not that she’d gotten any closer to him than the back of the bleachers were to third base. Jameson either, though she’d reminded him several times of the legal ramifications should he charge the field and bearhug his firstborn.

“Johnny’s amazing times a thousand. Mick and Marlene seem to be doing an okay job. He’s happy.”

Never had he referred to the couple as Johnny’s parents. First names only, please, no labels like Dad and Mom. Those were assigned to him and Chloe only, Jameson said. Saved for the day when they might be allowed to meet him.

“Julian’s pretty amazing too,” he added, tucking the daisy-dotted blanket around the hours-old baby, his hands bigger than their boy. “We’re absolutely not calling him Jule, or Ian, or God forbid, Julie. His name is Julian, too grown-up or not.”

Chloe laughed.

“You happy?” he whispered.

“Very,” she said, running a gentle finger over Julian’s tiny nose, tracing his miniature Jameson Maine features. “I’m so happy. Are you?”

When she looked up, the answer was obvious in his red-rimmed eyes, damp with emotion. He smiled, then kissed her.

And murmured, “Four against the world.”

My love for steamy romance began when I was in junior high. A friend and I noticed a dumpster of discarded paperbacks behind our local dime store. Covers missing and each book split down the spine, I scanned the pages for any love or lust words—and curse words, too. From that point on, I scoured the public library and the paperback racks at every store, reading anything labeled romance. I said a tearfully grateful goodbye to Judy Bloom, and Jackie Collins began ruling my world.

I live with my high school sweetheart husband in the desert Southwest. Awesome in the winter, not so much in the summer.

My life long goals are to think before I speak, smile more and swear less, and actually weigh what my driver’s license states I do.
