Work Me Good(118)
Author: Ali Parker

“I had a doctor appointment on Friday,” I told him.

“What? Why? You didn’t tell me?”

“I had to get some bloodwork done,” I explained. “While I was there, I got one more test.”

“What kind of test? Are you okay? Is the baby okay?”

“We are all good and healthy,” I told him with a big smile.

He was visibly relieved. “Thank god.”

“All of us are going to be just fine,” I said again.

“Good, I’m glad,” he said.

He wasn’t catching on to what I was saying. I grabbed his hand and brought it to my belly. He smiled. “I can’t wait until I can feel him or her kicking.”

“You’ll be able to feel them in another month or so,” I told him. I waited to see if he was going to pick up on the clues.

“I want to get one of those heartbeat things,” he said. “Davin said it was really cool. I want to be able to pop in and hear my baby’s heartbeat any time of the day.”

“I think that’s a great idea,” I said. “We’ll check on them both.”

He nodded and rubbed his hand over my belly. “Jace will get to hear his—”

He looked at me. I smiled and nodded, waiting for him to connect the dots. “Yes,” I said.

“Both?” he repeated. “Them? All of you?”

I nodded again. “Yes, both.”

He looked down at my belly. “Two?” he gasped. “There’s two of them in there?”

I laughed at the way he put it. “There are two babies. You get the full house in one swing. Good job, Daddy.”

He leaned his head back and yelled. Jace came running back into the kitchen. “What’s wrong?” he asked with shock.

“There’s two, buddy!” he shouted and picked Jace up and spun him around.

“Two what?”

“Two babies! Mom has two babies in her belly! You get two baby brothers or sisters!”

Jace looked like he was going to faint. “Two?”

I smiled. “Two.”

“Do you know what they are?” Nash asked.

I shook my head. “No. I told the doctor I would wait until you were with me.”

“Thank you,” he said in a husky voice. He pulled me into his arms and held me close. “Thank you for giving me the life I didn’t know I was missing out on. This is the best news ever. I’m so happy.”

“Me too.”

After another round of celebrating, our guests arrived. Jace was the one to break the news to everyone that walked through the door. It was a Mother’s Day I would never forget.
