“What an excellent plan.”

Epilogue

Irian followed the music.

Fael…

He could hear her, laughing playfully, tauntingly, teasingly…as he drifted. He had no longer had any form. Not Aryn’s, not the steel casing of Asrel’s, not the borrowed body of another bearer. None.

He was lost, entranced by the promise he sensed in her song but he had no true hope of really finding her.

Would this be his eternity then? Trapped in endless nothing, surrounded by her voice?

Well, he mused, his own thoughts so loud in the vast empty void. There are worse ways to spend eternity.

And it wasn’t like he hadn’t done plenty to earn his torments.

But the darkness ahead of him...was it fading?

A fire. Irian tried to move quicker, but with no form, it was hard to do anything more than drift.

In the next moment, the familiar scent of crushed grass surrounded him and he looked down, saw the plains of his youth beneath his feet and spreading out all around him.

He moved quicker, all but running until he finally reached the warmth of the campfire.

There, just a few paces from the protective stones of the fire, stood a lodging tent.

Lamplight from within highlighted a woman’s body and when she approached the flap, then pushed it aside, Irian squeezed his eyes shut.

“There you are.”

Fael...

Irian opened his eyes as she stepped out into the night.

Falling to his knees, he stared as Fael came to him.

When she cupped his cheek, he whispered, “Please...don’t let this be a dream.”

She sank to her knees before him and leaned in to kiss his sweetly.

“In a way, it is. It’s the final dream—our final dream, my warrior.” She cupped his face in her hands. “Our forever dream. Welcome to our eternity. I’ve been waiting for you for so, so long.”

She kissed him again.

And Irian let himself believe. After millennia of wandering, of loneliness and emptiness, he sank into Fael’s embrace and finally found peace.
