Epilogue

The next day…

Rordan couldn’t stop smiling. His world had come to an end the day before, only to be resuscitated by Fianna’s arrival. He didn’t know when Erith had decided that Fianna would be a Reaper, and it didn’t matter. None of the past did anymore.

There had been no sleep during the night as he and Fianna talked and made love and talked some more. She was disappointed at not being able to search out and speak to her mother now that she was a Reaper, but she could at least see her from afar. It was something Rordan would make sure Fianna got to do soon. That was part of the plans they had made during the long hours of the night.

He watched as Fianna was introduced to the rest of the Reapers. When it came time to meet Balladyn, she had been speechless, but the former King of the Dark had bowed his head and welcomed her into the fold. It was rare for a new Reaper to be created, and they’d had two in quick succession.

When Rordan spotted Cael and Erith off to the side, he made his way to them. “In my…turmoil…yesterday, I never asked if any of the Others had been captured.”

“Unfortunately, they learned what we were trying to do and retreated before we could secure one,” Erith explained.

That meant their hunt for the Others was still on. “They know of us. They intend to wipe us out.”

Cael snorted. “Do they now?”

Rordan exchanged a grin with Cael because they were both eager to face the Others again. Rordan turned his attention back to Erith. “I do have some news you might like. I saw Xaneth.”

Erith went still. “What?”

“He was there?” Cael asked with a frown.

Rordan nodded. “He walked out as I called for Eoghan to fight the Others. Xaneth would’ve faced both the leaders on his own, but I lowered my veil and joined him. When the battle was over, I tried to get him to wait, but he said it was better if he didn’t. Then he was gone.”

“Did he say anything else?” Erith asked in a soft voice.

“He simply told me that it would be better if we forgot we ever knew him.”

Cael blew out a breath. “Should we do as he asks?”

“No,” Erith stated before she walked away.

A moment later, Cael followed. Rordan returned to Fianna’s side as she and Aisling shared a smile over something Cathal had said. Rordan watched as his brethren stood together, those with mates, and those without. Their family was growing, which made him smile.

Then he recalled Hemming’s words about the Others’ plan for the Reapers.

Torin shifted his shoulders. Ever since he had gotten that feeling about Rordan being in trouble, he couldn’t shake it. It was like a dark cloud hanging over him—over all of them. And he knew it had to do with the Others.

It didn’t help that the Others had put a target on the Reapers’ backs. Time was running out. He wasn’t sure for who, but he knew the clock was ticking.

The calm that had descended over Xaneth after killing the evil on Achill Island hadn’t lasted long. Once more, he could smell the stench of malevolence permeating everything, everywhere. All he wanted was to sleep, to rest without the nightmare within pulling him back under.

But that couldn’t happen until all the wickedness was gone for good.

“Vaughn.”

He turned toward seductive voice, seeking the supple body, the pleasure he knew awaited. His arms wound about her as his lips descended upon hers. The kiss was fire and flame, consuming and devouring. They were skin to skin, their limbs tangled as they sought to get closer, ever closer.

The passion had begun as a spark the instant his eyes had landed upon her. That spark soon turned into an inferno. The intensity of what he felt, the force of his need, his hunger, left him shaking.

And the only cure was her.

He groaned when her hand slipped between them and wrapped around his arousal. She moved her hand up and down his length, pulling him closer and closer to an orgasm. He didn’t know how many times they had shared their bodies. Whenever he was with her, time ceased. There was nothing but her.

His breathing hitched. He wanted to stop her, to wait to have his pleasure until he’d made her climax at least twice. Her lips traveled down his neck and lower to his chest. Her mouth wrapped around his nipple and she flicked her tongue over it. He was powerless to resist her. Wherever she touched, he burned. Eager for more.

With every pump of her hand, he felt his orgasm approaching. He tried to open his eyes and see her face, but he couldn’t. Then it didn’t matter because his body was flooded with ecstasy. He reached for her, needing to hold her to feel her against him. Only she was gone.

Vaughn wrenched open his eyes to find himself alone, his harsh breaths filling the room. He glanced down at his stomach to see the evidence of his dream.

“Fuck,” he murmured and rolled out of bed to clean himself off.

He tossed aside the towel and stood in the doorway of the bathroom looking at his bed. The sheets were in disarray, the pillows on the floor. If he didn’t know better, he’d say he had a fun romp with someone. Only, there hadn’t been anyone but her.

When was this going to end? Vaughn wasn’t sure how much more he could take. It had been thousands of years since she had come into his life. One night. One beautiful, incredible night. And she vanished like smoke. No matter how far and wide he looked, he had yet to find her. He didn’t even know her name.

Hell, he barely remembered her face.

Vaughn shook his head as he dropped his chin to his chest. He could recall every detail of her body. He knew her sighs, her soft moans of pleasure. He knew the smell of her skin, the feel of her against him.

It was the other details he couldn’t remember that made him want to bellow to the heavens. When he’d first seen her through the throng of people, it had been instant attraction. The fires had burned all around the village. He hadn’t meant to stop, but something had drawn him to the humans.

They had been celebrating a great victory against an enemy. And no one celebrated like the Celts. They welcomed him, shoving a horn of mead into his hand as they danced and sang. Vaughn had always had a particular interest in the Celts. They were attuned to the earth in a way that others weren’t.

Vaughn had moved away from the group and leaned against an ancient, gnarled oak with limbs that twisted and reached far to the side. He watched the festivities with a smile. The mead was particularly good. Or perhaps, it was the magic in the air that night.
