She circled her arms around his neck, her fingers tangling in the short strands of his hair.
“Or perhaps I still have some of the Beast’s magic running through my veins.” She shrugged, her expression distracted. As if she was already forgetting her time in the darkness. “All I know is that I suddenly woke at the bottom of the cliff. That’s when I caught your scent.” She paused, glancing around as if noticing for the first time where they were. “What are you doing here?”
“Waiting for you.”
She blinked at his simple words. “For me?”
“Yes.”
“How did you know I’d be here?”
Xi glanced down at the sword that he’d dropped at the sight of Brigette. The silver blade shimmered in the moonlight, and the ground around the weapon had turned from ash gray to a soft, tender green. As if the magic in the sword was healing the land.
Giving a shake of his head, Xi returned his attention to Brigette. Later, he would sort through the strange events of the evening. For now, he intended to savor the miracle he’d been given.
“You’re my mate.” He bent down to sweep her off her feet, cradling her against his chest.
“My wolf agrees,” she growled, using her elongated fangs to scrape the skin of his chest.

“A very smart animal,” he whispered.
Brigette parted her lips to answer, only to snap them shut when she realized where he was carrying her.
“Did you do this?” she breathed, her eyes wide as she took in the small cottage.

She reached up, framing his face in her hands as she regarded him with a fierce intensity.
