She snorted a laugh, a black flame flickering in her eyes with it, a reaction she would need to learn to control better, especially around humans.
“We’ll wait out the king’s war. Then we’ll see,” he said. “But you never have to worry.”
“No?” she flicked him a sideways glance.
“No. Because I have more tricks up my sleeve, and I will always, always keep you safe.”
A buzzing alarm went off, and seated on his other side, Finn pulled out his cell phone and checked the screen.
“Fire,” Finn said, quietly, so the humans around wouldn’t hear.
Hadyn’s gaze fell to his fingertips, which he’d already shifted, listening to instructions from Finn.
Rune rolled his eyes at her. “Dragon caused.”
Hadyn scrunched up her nose. “Well, that didn’t last long.”
He shrugged. “Like I said. Dragon shifters.”
Finn turned and gave Delaney a lingering kiss. “Don’t wait up for me.”
Delaney offered a siren’s smile. “You sure about that?”
For the first time maybe ever, Rune witnessed Finn at a momentary loss for words and couldn’t help the snort of laughter that escaped him. Not that he was any better.
He levered out of his chair. “I have to go to work, love.”
Rune leaned over Hadyn, and she grabbed a fistful of shirt to tug him closer so she could kiss him hard, tasting of wine and smelling of mint. “Stay safe and come home to me,” she whispered against his lips.
Rune grinned into her sparkling eyes as Finn, Aidan, Drake, and Levi all gathered behind him, ready to go take care of business. “Don’t worry, love. We’re fucking amazing at what we do.”
With a wink, he kissed her again, then joined his team.
