She waited for the woman’s searching glance to fall upon her, as she knew it would.
She was ready. Their eyes met, and Kim saw the expression soften. After what seemed like an eternity Alex lowered her eyes and laughed at some private joke, as though she had known that Kim would not look away first.
‘Too right, bitch,’ she said as Alex got into a waiting car.
Kim watched it leave and wondered how long she had before Alex re-entered her life. It wouldn’t be for a while yet. Alex’s priority would be to get her life back in order, rebuild her business and re-establish her standing in society. She would come at her from a position of strength. The woman had been dangerous enough before her years in prison, and she could only wonder at the tricks she’d learned since.
She didn’t know how and she didn’t know when, but she did know that at some stage Alexandra Thorne would come for her again.

Many readers of the Kim Stone series will know that when dreaming up plots for the books, I like to present Kim with a situation she hasn’t been faced with before, just because I want to see how she reacts to it. In Stolen Ones I wanted to see how Kim would react when the killer appears to present himself right at the beginning of the case.
Like many others, I’ve recently been enthralled by the TV series Criminal, which focused on interviewing techniques and interrogation. From the very first episode I wanted to present a similar situation for Kim where along with the normal criminal processes followed by the team, she was reliant on reading and deciphering the suspect.
I thoroughly enjoyed researching CIA interrogation and questioning techniques as well as body language, and it gave me a great opportunity to bring back Kim’s favourite behaviourist, Alison Lowe.
In addition, it was interesting to catch up with Alexandra Thorne and continue to explore the strange dynamic that exists between her and Kim. I know that Alex is like Marmite and you either love or hate her, but from a writer’s point of view she is an intriguing character to write.
