“The Lord and a buttload of horses.” Alex laughed at their private joke.
Sadie and Evan approached, Evan with a confused smile on his face.
“What are we laughing about? The groom’s two left feet?”
“He didn’t step on my toes once,” Brenne corrected. “If anyone needs a dancing lesson, it’s you.”
Sadie laughed. “Your brother has rhythm when it counts.”
Brenne pretended to vomit. “Sadie, if you ever say anything like that again, I’ll have to ban you from the ranch.”
Evan sported a wicked smile. He hugged his wife to him. “Don’t be jealous, sis. This is what a happily married woman looks like.”
“There are plenty of those around here,” Mama May said as she joined them. “Just look around you. Right, Louisa?”
“Yes, Mama May,” she said, beaming.
“By the way,” Sadie said, putting a hand on her shoulder as she sat beside Emma and Ryker. “When is the baby due?”
Everyone froze. Mama May’s eyes widened. “Baby? You’re having a baby?” Her voice carried across the barn. Brenne looked in Johnnie’s direction. His mouth had dropped open, and he was shaking his head in dismay. She watched him throw down his towel and come marching over.
“You ruined the surprise!” he lamented when he reached the table.
“It wasn’t me,” Lou said, holding up her hands in innocence.
Sadie covered her mouth with her hand. “Oh dear, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to spill the beans.”
“Johnnie MacAllen, how dare you keep that news from me?” Mama May swatted at him, but he danced out of the way.
Alex took her hand and led Brenne away from the uproar at the table. He took her behind the barn where Comet and Ghost were tied, their wedding finery replaced with saddles. “Come on,” he said, untying the horses and mounting Ghost. “What do you say we get out of here?”
“And go where?” she asked. They were in the middle of their big wedding party, and he wanted to leave?
“Home,” he said simply. His eyes filled with heat, and an answering heat hit her insides. She wasted no time climbing into the saddle. They set off over the field, the sound of their hooves causing folks to come out of the barn and wave farewell.
The ground blurred beneath them, and Brenne pulled off her hat to let out a whoop that echoed across the fields. Alex laughed, then let out a whoop of his own. As they hurried toward home, Brenne could feel the excitement building inside her. She knew they’d spend the night in each other’s arms, making love until dawn. It was the perfect end to the perfect day.
The only thing better than knowing Alex was about to make long, slow love to her was knowing that she’d be spending every night with him from here on in. Every night she’d love him until they were exhausted, and every morning she’d wake up in his arms.
It was a life she could get used to.
