The Best of Both Wolves (Red Wolf #2)(45)
Author: Terry Spear

   “You are so right.”

He kissed her and she kissed him back. He was fun to be with, even when he was finished making love to her.

She went with him to his bathroom this time, and they showered together, though they didn’t wash their hair this time. She helped him dry off while he was drying her off. He made everything intimate and exciting between them, she realized.

Now it was time to snuggle with him before work started all over again.

She cuddled next to Adam, thinking this was truly a new beginning for her in all ways. She was looking forward to going to Tori’s house and helping her unpack boxes in three days. She hoped she and Adam could really make a difference for her. And boating on Sunday. But tomorrow night, they would go to the wolf dance club, and they’d have to come up with some plans for Thursday and Friday nights too.

Before she was ready for it, the alarm went off and she and Adam had to go into work. She was glad he hadn’t had to go in early this morning, and they had been able to wake up together. They had breakfast and then drove to the bureau in their separate vehicles.

   * * *

“What time did you want us to drop by on Saturday to help you unload your boxes?” Adam asked Tori as they returned to the bureau after a long, exhausting hump day.

“Let’s make it eleven. We can start unpacking, order meals, have lunch, and unpack some more. There’s no sense in everyone having to get up so early. Oh, and Ethan, Josh and Brooke, and our coroner said they would drop by to help. Josh’s brother, Maverick, said he would too.”

Adam shook his head. “Don’t tell the whole pack, or you’ll have all the bachelor males at your place trying to outdo each other.”

Tori laughed. “That’s the good thing about having more bachelor males in the pack. There are more to choose from.”

Sierra joined them outside. “Don’t tell me you have more work for me.” She looked done in.

“No, we were just talking about what time we need to drop by Tori’s place on Saturday.” Adam told Sierra who all was coming.

Sierra smiled at Tori. “That sounds like a lot of fun.”

“You bet. See you tomorrow at work,” Tori said, waved at them, then headed for her car.

“I’ll follow you home so you can pack up some more clothes that you might need,” Adam said to Sierra.

“I was thinking that maybe I would be all right at home—”

“You’re coming home with me.” The words slipped out of Adam’s mouth before he could stop himself.

Thank God she laughed and wasn’t annoyed at his knight-defending-the-damsel declaration. “All right then,” she said, still smiling as she got into her car.

At least Tori hadn’t heard him say that, or he was sure she would have given him a lecture.

He followed Sierra to her house and hoped she hadn’t had anyone break in again. He parked behind her car in the driveway, then hurried to get out of his Hummer to go inside her home first and make sure everything was safe.

She unlocked the door, then stepped aside for him while he had his gun in hand and moved quietly into the house. He didn’t think anyone would be inside her house right now, but it was better to be safe than run into trouble, especially since Sierra was unarmed.

He checked all the rooms, one by one, recalling when he had been wearing only her sweatpants while they were having a steak dinner when her boyfriend arrived. He smiled, glad the guy was out of the picture. Richard hadn’t known when he had a good thing. He sure as hell didn’t deserve Sierra.

Adam finished looking through all the rooms and found that Sierra’s laundry room window had already been replaced. He didn’t smell any new smells. He went out back and no one new had been out there either.

He returned to the front door where Sierra was still standing, arms folded across her chest, looking annoyed. Not at him, he didn’t think. But at the situation. He knew how she felt—violated. Her home probably didn’t feel safe any longer.

   “Everything’s clear.”

“Okay, thanks.” She headed into the bedroom.

“Did you need my help with anything?”

“Why don’t you see if there’s anything in the fridge or freezer that we could have for dinner tomorrow night.”

“Sure. I’ll do that.” He looked in her fridge and found more corn on the cob and hamburger in the freezer. “Hey, how does corn on the cob and hamburgers on the grill sound to you?”

“Sounds like a winner,” she said from her master bedroom. “And in the bread box, I have hamburger buns.”

   “Okay, got them.”

She joined him in the kitchen, hauling a suitcase. She’d changed into khaki shorts, a tank top, and sandals. He smiled. She looked like she was ready to take the boat out for a spin.

“I know we were going to the wolf restaurant tonight, but why don’t we skip that and grill the hamburgers tonight.”

“Yeah, sure, that works for me.”

She glanced at her artwork that was all torn up.

He hated seeing it like that and the upset in her expression. He came over and rubbed her shoulders. “What can I do for you?”

She sighed. “When I have time, I’ll redo them. Nothing I can do right now. I packed a lot more than I’ll need. I feel more settled now that I have the security installed and I can return home.”

He was thinking more like when she had no more trouble—when the guys they were after were in jail, or dead—then she could return home.

“Hey,” Sierra said as she wheeled her suitcase out to her car. “I don’t want you to think anything of it but if…well, Josh says something about you not selling your boat anytime soon so you could take me out, ignore him.”

Adam smiled at her. He loaded the groceries and her bag into her car.

She shrugged. “We were just talking, not about you. But somehow, I mentioned boating, and well, just saying…”

Adam chuckled. “Okay. Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll follow you over to the house.” He knew Josh was thinking Adam was making a play for Sierra.

When they arrived at the house and parked in the garage, she hesitated to pull in too, but he’d made room for her. He motioned for her to pull her car in. That way, Dover’s men wouldn’t know it was there unless they had eyes on the place, and they couldn’t do anything to it again unless they alerted him and Sierra. Once she parked in the garage, he grabbed her bag for her, and she got the groceries. They went inside, and he locked the door.

“I’ll take the hamburgers and corn on the cob out and grill them,” he said.
