An organized crime lord knew better than to turn his back on someone he didn't trust. More than likely, the murderer was someone familiar to him. Someone he trusted. Someone he'd loved.
Timber slapped Romeo's thigh and straightened. "Alright, I need to get ready for work. Are you going over to the clubhouse?"
"Yeah." He pushed himself to his feet. "I'll need to inform Onyx about Dice taking off. I doubt if he stopped to let anyone know his plans to skip town."
She leaned into him, stretching to her toes, and kissed him. "I'll hurry."
"I'll be outside waiting." He grabbed a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket.
At the door, he stopped when Timber screeched behind him.
"Oh, my God, Brody. Put some pants on," shouted Timber.
A door shut upstairs. Romeo shook his head. One of these days, his brothers would have to move out. Maybe he needed to find some women for them. Perhaps then, they'd stop teasing his wife.
He stepped out of the house and lit the cigarette. Axel pulled into the driveway.
He pointed to the street. "Hey, grab the garbage can and bring it in."
Axel threw up his hand, turned, and lumbered to the curb. Amusement hit Romeo, and he grinned. Habits were inbred in all of them. He, more than the others, remembered every detail of their lives.
At times, he carried the role of big brother, but more often, he was the head of the household. But it was time for him to loosen his hold and let his brothers go out on their own. They all needed to learn how to stay alive and out of jail.
Sink or swim.
Fight or die.
He blew smoke up in the air. If Timber could survive on her own, his brothers could do it with the support of the family behind them.
Brody burst out of the house behind him. "Late night tonight."
Axel approached the front of the house. "Sander got shot."
Romeo broke the cigarette between his fingers. "What the fuck are you talking about?"
"He was out on a job early this morning and got too close to a bullet." Axel lifted his shirt and pointed to his ribs. "Took about three inches of the skin off. A half-inch more, and the shot would've got his ribs."
"Motherfucker," mumbled Romeo.
Axel grinned. "He's already at Shady's drinking. Everyone's buying him a beer in honor of being shot."
"Call him and..." Romeo clenched his teeth and threw his hands in the air. "Fuck it. Let him deal with it on his own."
"Whoa." Brody frowned. "Are you okay?"
Turner arrived and parked in the driveway behind Axel's rig. Romeo stared at them all, knowing Caleb would be the next one to arrive home.
"I'm done, covering your asses." He picked up the broken cigarette and dropped it in the coffee can filled with sand. "You guys need to move the fuck out and—"
"No. What are you doing?" Timber hurried to him. "They can't move out."
"Doll..." A growl erupted. "They're grown-ass men."
She shook her head, leaned in, and kissed the hardness away from his lips. Then, she whispered, "They're family. Our family."
Just like that, Timber settled him down. He patted her ass, letting her know there was no use talking about it more. He'd back off.
She kissed him quickly and grabbed his hand. "We need to hurry. I start work in fifteen minutes."
Brody slapped Romeo in the chest. "Better hurry."
"Go on, bro." Axel slapped him in the back. "Don't keep my sister-in-law waiting."
The only thing keeping him from taking out both of them was the soft, slim fingers locked in his hand. At the bike, he handed Timber her helmet.
His gaze swept down her body. Over her shorts and tank, she had on her leathers.
He lifted his chin. "Turn around, doll."
She twirled slowly for him. He took in the back of her legs, and all the skin and warmth filled him. That was his woman. His wife.
"Don't be looking like that." She laughed. "We'll be late."
The happiness radiating off her was contagious. He forgot about his brothers, the scheduled ride for tomorrow, and the need to inform Prez about Dice.
Kissing her hard, he then got on his motorcycle. Then, he let his woman slide on behind him and ride on the back of his Harley.
