Taking the Leap (River Rain #3)(103)
Author: Kristen Ashley

She’d put in a frame.

So yeah.

In the end…

His woman totally fucking one-upped him.

And Rix didn’t mind.

Not even a little bit.

Discussion & Reflection Questions

1) Is this the first time you’ve read a romance with a hero or heroine living with a disability? What did you think? Would you seek out more?

* * *

Also, were you as surprised as Rix at the non-issue this was for Alex?

* * *

2) The mysterious Dani gives Alex advice about her love life, making it clear life is meant to be lived and risks are meant to be taken, even if the heart is involved. And yet, Rix and Alex are co-workers. Do you feel this was good advice? Or do you think Alex was right to take a step back and think hard about flirting—or taking something further—with a colleague?

* * *

3) At first it seems that, due to her shyness, Alex is considered by others as unusual or vulnerable. As the book progresses, however, the reader finds that she’s mostly an introvert and in fact knows herself very well and has it together. So much so that, in the end, Rix is quick to defend her as a strong, capable woman who simply doesn’t enjoy parties or crowds.

* * *

Did you fall into the assumption that Alex has some fragility due to being quiet and/or shy?

* * *

Further from this, are you an introvert or an extrovert? Either way, do you feel there are certain expectations put on you because of that trait? For instance, people expecting you to “get over it” and be more social if you’re an introvert. Or people expecting you to “carry” a social situation if you’re an extrovert. How does that make you feel? Did reading this book help you to realize that introversion is a natural characteristic that doesn’t need to be overcome?

4) Those who love him handle Rix with kid gloves due to his change in life circumstances. Judge and Rix have a very open, honest relationship with easy communication, even if what needs to be communicated is difficult. And yet Judge couldn’t broach the subject of asking Rix how he’s handling living with his disability.

* * *

Do you sense that Rix’s womanizing might have been alleviated if the ones around him didn’t treat this new part of his life as untouchable, and instead he’d had someone to talk to about how he was coping? Or is it your opinion, instead, that Rix should have spoken to those around him and shared what he needed?

* * *

5) Onward from this, Peri is set up to be the villain of this book, however, the core of her issue is very true. When life-altering situations happen, like Rix losing his legs, they happen to a person and to those who love them. Everyone needs some level of support and training to learn how to live with the altered circumstances. Peri didn’t seek this out, or address it with Rix, but how did you feel when she made her point to Elsa that her life, too, had been changed? Did you feel she had a valid argument?

* * *

6) Ned makes the point that the masses don’t make change, it’s visionaries who change the thinking of the masses. Who are some visionaries that you admire who brought our society forward? How did they do that?

* * *

Further, what kind of programs do you think Trail Blazer should launch that might reach future visionaries? And what real-life programs do you know that help children of any walk of life overcome obstacles and reach their potential?

* * *

7) Alex and Rix’s families couldn’t be more different. Rix has been raised middle class, with a loving, close family, while Alex’s family had prestige and wealth, and they barely know one another. Alex only found true happiness when she left those trappings behind and sought a place to be her true self.

* * *

With this in mind, what do you think is next for Ned and Blake? Do you think this family will grow closer and face their past remoteness? Do you think Ned will find love after harboring resentment against Helena for so long? Do you think Blake will tackle the superficiality of her world and find something deeper?

* * *

8) Alex wears “camouflage” when she’s in New York and almost seems to inhabit another life, the one she grew up in and left behind.

* * *

Are there times in your life you feel you need camouflage or are in the position to do things you don’t normally do in your day-to-day life? What are those? How does that make you feel?

* * *

9) What kind of partner do you see for Jamie? Dru? Dani? Ned? Blake?

* * *

10) Do you think Rix ever read Alex’s binder?

From a very young age, Chloe Pierce was trained to look after the ones she loved.

And she was trained by the best.

But when the man who looked after her was no longer there, Chloe is cast adrift—just as the very foundation of her life crumbled to pieces.

Then she runs into tall, lanky, unpretentious Judge Oakley, her exact opposite. She shops. He hikes. She drinks pink ladies. He drinks beer. She’s a city girl. He’s a mountain guy.

Obviously, this means they have a blowout fight upon meeting. Their second encounter doesn’t go a lot better.

Judge is loving the challenge. Chloe is everything he doesn’t want in a woman, but he can’t stop finding ways to spend time with her. He knows she’s dealing with loss and change.

He just doesn’t know how deep that goes. Or how ingrained it is for Chloe to care for those who have a place in her heart, how hard it will be to trust anyone to look after her…
