You Keep Breaking Us(46)
Author: Carrie Aarons

“Is Taya coming this weekend?” I ask, just double checking.

“She and Austin booked a hotel near the monuments, so we can all do the touristy stuff. But it’ll be fun and then maybe we can take them to the Hay-Adams to be all fancy and shit.”

In the two years since we’ve lived in DC, all of our friends have been here to visit. Some of them multiple times, like Amelie, who comes whenever Gannon is on-location for a show because she’s obsessed with the Library of Congress. Taya and Austin usually come down on Amtrak, and we visit them in NYC a couple of times a year.

Usually, when we’re passing through to go see my parents or my sisters. My entire family is so excited to be gaining another member that they grill us on the wedding every time we talk.

And of course, all of our friends, aside from Scott who took a job in London and only comes home on rare occasions, meet up in Webton during Thanksgiving or Christmas. We all go out drinking like old times, even though the hangovers are getting slightly worse as we age.

We see Bevan’s mom in a limited capacity. We’re always mindful to stop in when we visit my parents in Webton, but it’s just not the same. As Bevan has said, her mother feels slighted in life. She thinks she was dealt a bad hand of cards, and still lives as if the entire world is against her and she’s got something to prove. It’s honestly sad, and I feel for her, but her daughter is amazing and she’d see that if she got her head out of her own ass for three seconds.

But we don’t need her, and Bevan is certainly less insecure about her worth when her mother is far out of the picture. She graduated from therapy as we graduated from college, and although she still has Dr. Miranda in her phone book, she’s needed less and less sessions over the years. She’s still the girl I fell in love with, bitchy side and all.

“Sounds good to me. And then Scott is coming for my birthday?”

“I’m not telling you shit about your birthday.” She smirks as if trying to keep some big surprise.

“If I give you two orgasms tonight, will you tell me. Or better yet, change your name?” I butter her up, hoping she will.

“Why is this so important to you?” She laughs haughtily. “Plus, it’ll take way more than two to make that deal come true.”

“A shrewd negotiator as always. Fine, a hundred. Before the wedding day. And it’s a big deal because you are my family. I want us to be as close as two people can be, and that means sharing a last name. It’s not some macho thing to show dominance over you, it’s because we’ll be tied together. Of the same unit.”

Her eyes soften. “I guess I can get on board with that. But I still want those promised orgasms.”

I pick her up, right out of her dinner chair, and head toward the bedroom. “I guess we should get started then, huh?”

I was a freshman in high school dreaming about this time in my life, and of all the things I thought possible, this is even better.

No matter what life throws at us, I’ll always have the girl who is the other half of me. Here to ignite me, challenge me, and then heal me like no one else can.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Author of romance novels such as Fool Me Twice and Love at First Fight, Carrie Aarons writes books that are just as swoon-worthy as they are sarcastic. A former journalist, she prefers the love stories of her imagination, and the athleisure dress code, much better.

When she isn't writing, Carrie is busy binging reality TV, having a love/hate relationship with cardio, and trying not to burn dinner. She’s a Jersey girl living in Texas with her husband, daughter, son and Great Dane/Lab rescue.

Please join her readers group, Carrie’s Charmers, to get the latest on new books, as well as talk about reality TV, wine and home decor.
