Charm Me(21)
Author: Samantha Chase

That would be wrong, wouldn’t it?

In that moment, she didn’t care how right or wrong it was; it was what she wanted.

Jamie must have felt the same way because his hands lowered to her waist and maneuvered her until she was straddling his lap.

And boy oh boy, did that feel incredible.

Her breasts pressed against his chest, his hands were gently kneading her bottom, and the kiss just kept going on and on and on.

In her mind, he was going to lift her up and carry her to bed. No man had ever done such a thing with her, but right now she could envision it so clearly in her mind that she was practically willing it to happen. She felt bold—brazen—as she moved against him, and when they broke apart, he trailed kisses along her jaw and throat.

“Yes…that feels amazing…so good…” she whispered breathlessly.

Her hands smoothed back up his body and raked through his hair. She’d always thought Jamie had the greatest hair she’d ever seen on a guy and to be able to touch it felt a little decadent.

Whispering his name—panting it, really—Fallon hoped he could read her mind. His movements slowed a little and she took it to mean he was savoring what he was doing, but then…he stopped.

What the…?

And that’s when she heard it.

A snore.

Pulling back, she stared down and noticed his head was thrown back against the cushions, his eyes were closed, and he was most definitely asleep.

Right then and there, it was hard to say which emotion was stronger—rage or mortification.

Mortification, she thought, as she carefully climbed off of him.

There was no way she could move him to his room, so she took a solid minute to compose herself—glaring at him the entire time—and then picked up their mugs and put them in the dishwasher. Walking back over to him, she tried to wake him, but he was out cold.

The only thing she could do was awkwardly guide him into a better position on the sofa and cover him with a blanket.

And pray that she didn’t have to face him in the morning.

Luck was on her side the next morning and she was just coming out of the room with Asher as Jamie was putting his shoes on to leave.

“Hey,” he said, looking a little guarded. “How did he do last night?”

“Great. He slept for a little over four hours the first time. When he woke up around three, I kept the room dim and spoke softly to him so he would know it wasn’t time to really be awake. I changed him and had his bottle ready and he was back to sleep by 3:30 and then just woke up a few minutes ago. So hopefully he’ll stay on this four-to-four-and-a-half-hour schedule for a bit and then move on to a five-hour stretch.”

The entire time she spoke, she was in motion—putting Asher in his bouncy seat, grabbing a bottle from the fridge, and putting a coffee pod in the Keurig for herself. She didn’t want to look directly at him because she was incredibly embarrassed that she wasn’t appealing enough to keep a guy awake while they were making out.

Ugh…making out. Do adults still call it that?

When she had no choice but to turn around, he was talking to Asher and being a little silly and that helped her not want to strangle him and tell him off for still crushing her self-esteem without using his words.

“Aren’t you going to be late?” she asked, hoping to nudge him out the door, and that was her downfall. He knew what she was doing and now he was going to want to talk about it.

And Fallon knew she couldn’t let that happen.

“I’m sorry about last night,” he finally said.

She looked at him oddly. “What do you mean?” Because, yeah, there was no way she wanted to discuss this, so she was just going to pretend it never happened.

“What do you mean, what do I mean? Last night? On the couch? We were…you know…kissing and I fell asleep?”

Frowning, she turned and walked over to the fridge to get some cream for her coffee. “Jamie, I think you must have been dreaming. We sat on the couch and talked for a little while, and you fell asleep mid-sentence.” Looking at him, she shrugged. “It wasn’t a big deal. I’m just sorry you had to sleep on the couch all night. I couldn’t get you to wake up, so I grabbed a blanket for you and went to bed.”

His dark eyes narrowed. “Wait…no. No, we talked, but then we kissed. I distinctly remember that. We were in the middle of the couch and I pulled you into my lap and…”

“Sorry, dude. That never happened. I think you were just overtired and maybe imagining things.” She finished fixing her coffee and heating Asher’s bottle. She moved both to the coffee table in the living room before picking Asher back up and taking him over to the sofa. “Hey, sweet boy. Who’s ready for breakfast?”

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Jamie still standing in the kitchen, looking thoroughly confused. Part of her felt bad for lying to him, but there was no way she could handle the embarrassment of talking about how unappealing she was.

I literally put men to sleep. Awesome.

“I guess I’m gonna go then,” he said, scrubbing a hand along the back of his neck. “You’re staying tonight, right?”

“Mm-hmm…but I have plans to meet up with some friends for dinner, so…” She shifted Asher slightly in her arms. “I’ll be back by ten to put him to sleep so you don’t have to worry.”

“I wasn’t worried,” he countered. “I just, uh…I didn’t know you had plans tonight.”

“Well, I didn’t realize I was going to be staying here when I made them. It will be fine. No worries. Have a good day.”

Luckily he took the hint and finally left.

The day was fairly uneventful and when Jamie walked in the door at five, Fallon had everything set out for him that he should need. Asher had bottles ready, she had laid out pajamas for the baby, and even set up his bath supplies in the bathroom for them.

“I’ll be back by ten, but if you see that he’s getting sleepy, take him into his room and make sure the lights are dim and talk to him softly and read him a story. The rocking chair is super comfy and he seems to like when we sit in it. But most importantly, don’t tense up when you put him in the crib. He can sense that.”

All Jamie did was nod.

“Okay, then. I’ll see you later!” With a wave, she walked out the door and made her way to her car.

And drove directly to her parents’ house because she had nowhere to go.

She’d made a few calls during the day, but no one was available to hang out and it seemed like too much of an effort to keep trying. Now she was going to call for some Chinese takeout, watch a little TV and enjoy the alone time, and possibly do a little job hunting. That had been put on the back-burner this last week, but it was something she couldn’t keep putting off. In two weeks, Jamie wasn’t going to need her anymore and she wanted to at least try to look like a responsible adult by the time her parents got home from their trip. There were two packages waiting for her on the front porch and she knew they were a couple of the self-help books she ordered online.

“Yippee…” she murmured, as she opened them up and then promptly tossed them aside. “So not in the mood to read these right now.”

So…she ate some dumplings and egg drop soup, watched a couple of episodes of Gilmore Girls, and then applied for two positions that sort of fit her field. The first was an education consultant and the other was for a part-time position as an early childhood education coach. Neither one thrilled her, but she knew she needed to start somewhere.
