Reckless (The Hartleys)(20)
Author: Valeria Heights

I was in Seattle visiting a friend from college. I didn’t know my younger sister was there, even though I could have figured it out if I gave it a thought. She spent a few weeks with dad every August.

The big surprise was that that particular summer Hannah Spencer came with her.

I planned on crashing at my friend’s house, but my father wanted me to spend some time with Clem, as if she was visiting me there and not him. I had no intensions of complying with his request to stay at his house, but I promised to go and spend a few hours with the girls.

Dad’s girlfriend Adina greeted me while talking on the phone with someone. She waved me in, and I followed her. We entered the living room and she pointed to the windows.

Clem sat outside by the pool. Alone.

I strolled over to her. The moment she saw me, her body stiffened. She flipped the piece of paper she was holding and covered the box of crayons next to her. High school girls were so secretive. Like I was interested in a seventeen-year-old girl’s secrets.

“Hey, little monster,” I spread my arms wide as if I was waiting for her to stand up and throw herself at me. That wasn’t her style, so she rolled her eyes instead.

“Dad made you come after all.”

Not a question. A statement. A truth. There wasn’t any point in me lying to her about it, so I nodded.

“I’m not alone,” she said. “You can go do your thing. You don’t have to sit here and be a buffer between me and Adina.”

“And this is why you are my favorite family member,” I settled down on the sunbed right next to her. “Anything interesting back home I should know about?”

“Sylvia is still a bitch, if that’s what you’re asking.”

“Your life doesn’t have to revolve around Sylvia.”

She didn’t answer, which wasn’t a big surprise. My sisters and I grew up in a home where talking about feelings wasn’t a thing. Except my mother’s feelings. They varied from annoyance to disappointment to contempt depending on the sibling and the situation.

I leaned back and closed my eyes. We lay under the sun for a few minutes. Then I heard a warm happy sounding voice, I knew didn’t belong to Adina.

“You are here.”

I opened my eyes. Hannah Spencer was standing right in front of me, beaming. She wore a white bikini that revealed her flat stomach and long legs. It looked good on her tan skin. I couldn’t stop my eyes from moving up and down her body. I had to remind myself she was only seventeen, a child, and my sister’s best friend. My sister’s only friend and I was acting like a perv.

“Hey, little Spencer,” I answered, and I managed to sound bored. I couldn’t risk showing interest in her. “You look happier than this one over here.” I pointed at Clem with my chin. My words earned me a death glare from my sister. Hannah giggled at the exchange.

I wondered what these two could possibly like in one another. They were so different. First of all, my sister never giggled. She was moody, unstable, and hateful, while Hannah was calm and inviting. She was always talking and smiling. Peace was pouring out of her with every move she made. Not to mention that her blue eyes and blond hair gave her an angelic look that could drive any man crazy.

“Are you staying?” Hannah asked and I felt her eyes scanning my face. I lifted my gaze up to meet hers.

“No,” I shook my head. “I’m visiting a friend. And I’m going back to Boston tomorrow.”

Her joyous smile became a sad one.

I could stay for a while. Not because of her, obviously. But spending the night here would probably help me get out of some family gathering in the future.

“You two look like you need some help in the fun department. Maybe I should stay.”

“What about your friend?” Clem asked with a tone that made it clear she preferred me gone.

“He is having a party tonight, so I could use you two as an excuse to skip the shopping. I will leave after your bedtime and show up there right in time for the fun part,” I teased.

Adina joined us by the pool. I informed her I was staying after all and went inside to call my friend.

“I’m crashing at my father’s tonight.”

“Of course you are,” he said suggestively.

“Am I missing something?” I asked.

“You are staying there because of the girls.”

“What girls?” I asked. “It’s only my dad’s girlfriend and I’m not into that kink. The other one is my sister’s best friend. She’s a fucking child,” I said, trying to convince him as much as myself.

I finished the conversation and went back to the pool. I noticed Hannah barely looked at me and didn’t have the slightest clue why.

We had a good time that afternoon. I always felt good in the company of women. Maybe because I grew up with three opinionated ones and I had to find a way to get along with them.

Adina laughed at my jokes the most. Clem suppressed smiles every now and again. Hannah read her book and glanced at me from time to time with a blank expression on her face. When Dad came home, we had an early dinner. He passed me a key across the table so I could sneak back in the middle of the night without waking up everyone in the house. I reached down to my pocket and took out my keychain to put the key on it.

Later that night, I returned to my father’s house. I was drunk and tried to go to my room as quietly as possible. It was three in the morning and even through the haze of alcohol, I realized it would be shitty move on my part to wake everyone up.

I stumbled through the door of my room and walked over to the bed. I didn’t really know the house and the decorations. It was dark and I knocked down the lamp from the nightstand. The damn thing was heavy and the noise it made when it hit the floor echoed around me. I cursed under my breath and left it right where it fell. I took everything out of my pockets and dumped in on the bed, then unbuttoned my shirt with some effort. I let it fall down, probably next to the lamp, and headed for the shower. Every bedroom in this house had its own bathroom which was great considering my current state. I wasn’t exactly keeping it quiet even though I tried.

I turned on the shower and released I was still wearing my jeans. I left the water running--my father could afford it--and went back inside the bedroom to take the rest of my clothes off.

A female figure stood next to my bed, going through my things. I blinked twice to see if my drunken brain was imagining things, but no. The pretty little Hannah Spencer was definitely in my room in the middle of the night. Almost naked.

“What are you doing?” I whispered behind her, and she almost jumped out of her skin. She shot me a look over her shoulder and obviously decided she didn’t have to explain herself being in my room, going through my stuff, because she just turned her back on me.

I used the fact she was preoccupied with something and allowed myself to look at her. She was wearing a black tank top that barely reached her waist. Her ass was on full display if you don’t count the black lace panties that covered some of it.

She produced a satisfied sound, turned around and bolted for the door. One of her small hands was squeezing something. I immediately positioned myself in front of her, took her hand in mine and opened her palm. That whole situation felt way too familiar, but I still couldn’t connect the dots.
