As an author of Regency fiction, I often find a way to limit the number of servants that are in the household because it keeps the story from getting complicated. Most readers of this time period know ladies had maids to take care of their clothing, comb their hair, and tie or button them into their clothing. If I wrote in as many staff as would be required for a member of the ton, it would be cumbersome.
Ladies in the Regency era were ruled by men. When a man wanted to marry a woman, he had to ask permission from the male head of the family, be it her father, brother, uncle, or cousin twice removed. After marriage, her husband directed her life and their children’s. He controlled all her finances, including any property or funds she might have brought into the marriage.
As an author, I strive to weave the modern man who tries his best to understand what women went through into a historical hero, a man who must be helpful, respectful, and take responsibility for his good and bad behavior.
The premise of every story I write is that my heroine wants the hero to desire her more than anything in life and be willing to go after her and prove to her she is the only one for him.
