“I’ve given you most of the board members’ names of SPEONUS but there are three I omitted.” Billy glanced around the table until his gaze locked on Parker, who was about to become his son-in-law and stared at him with suspicion in his eyes. With his history as an assassin on the wrong side of the law, it wasn’t easy to win their trust but at least he was making progress. It was the first time he was brought to The Seven Keys Island to meet with them in the underground bunker from where they operated their security business, Be Secure Enterprises. It didn’t matter that he had been blindfolded, since he understood it was the norm with anyone gaining access to it.
It was a step in the right direction. Maybe it was time to open up to them as well.
“As difficult as it is for you to trust me, so is it for me. I learned to be cautious because I walk around with a fucking massive bullseye on my back.” He looked at Shane. “I didn’t know I had a daughter but the moment I looked into Ava’s eyes, I loved her and I intend to grow old getting to know her better and being part of her and her children’s lives. Because of that, I am willing to expose myself to all of you.” He straightened in the chair. It was evident he wasn’t comfortable sitting down. “I kept it from you because I know you have a very close relationship with one of them.”
“We’re listening.” Stone’s gaze sharpened.
“Sheila Madden, Secretary of State and soon to be Presiding President of the United States.”
“Holy fuck,” Zeke grated as silence descended on the room. Each of them struggled to come to terms with exactly how corrupt the government and presidential cabinet members were.
“It seems our instincts not to trust anyone close to the President were correct,” Hawk mused as he stared at Billy. “And the other two?”
“The property mogul Alan Kezzler and the financial wizard, David Yale.”
“This is just fucking getting worse by the minute,” Zeke exploded. He looked at Stone. “Now more than ever, we need to keep Taylor safe.”
“Taylor Banks?” Billy looked between them. “The attorney involved in the property war with Kezzler Partners?”
“Yes, and my about to be confirmed permanent sub,” Zeke said shortly as his fingers flew over the keyboard of his laptop. “She’s about to win that case, which is why she’d been receiving threats for months.” He swiped a picture onto the massive monitor on the wall. “I’ve been struggling to get past the firewalls but it just came through. Kezzler and Yale are also the two primary owners listed on the trust in which name the Burke Lake section of land in question was registered.” His jaw turned rigid. “One problem is that the restaurant, The Lake Shack, is registered to a different trust, which from what I could find, has no association with Kezzler or his company. From all appearances, that trust is the legal owners of the piece of land it’s built on, which means the ruling isn’t going to be straight forward. Bottom line is that Kezzler might lose the land but the restaurant could remain in the hands of the owners.” He pointed at the picture. “Of course, courtesy of Billy, we established their sole purpose of obtaining the land was to secure an access point to their underground operation bunker for SPEONUS.”
“We were completely blindsided by David Yale,” Kane said as he stared at the photos of the two men on the screen. “His abduction was staged and we fucking fell for it.”
“We had our suspicions until we watched that security tape of the kidnapping, which was done so perfectly we had no way of knowing it was a setup.” Stone got up and started pacing. “They planned it very carefully. Ensure the President’s mind is filled with concern for his best friend while taking him out of the equation to set their plan into action. It’s hard to believe he’d be that unscrupulous to fuck over his best friend. Worse, that he was party to the explosion that killed James Grayson.”
