Rory started to get up then handed our daughter to me instead. "You do it, studly. I'm not going anywhere near that hallway until I see them come back out from wherever they went."
I leaned over and kissed his cheek. "Anything for you, Irish. I've been blessed with a perfect mate and a precious daughter. I can handle anything with you by my side."
Rory's eyebrows shot up. "I love you too, but I'm still not going down that hallway."
I winked and pointed across the room. "There's no need. Not when there is a fully packed diaper bag sitting by the front door."
Rory got up and reached for my hand. "Good point. We can grab it on our way out of here. I vote we move the party to Da's house."
Cradling Ciara as I stood, I took his hand and threaded our fingers together. "See? I really was blessed when the fates chose you. Beauty and brains? Hell, yeah."
A loud wave of laughter came from the kitchen. Vasily nodded in that direction. "Should we tell them we're leaving?"
Rory's eyes filled with mischief. "Nah. They'll figure it out eventually. Or Patrick will do what he does best and stumble onto something he can't unsee. Either way works for me."
River snickered. "I like you, Rory. We need to hang out more often."
"Too late," Leaf chirped. "I'm already his bestie. Besides, you have Tanner who thinks you’re awesome." Gary and Tanner quietly herded the older children out the door with Pavlo's help while everyone else carried the babies and toddlers.
Vasily looked over at me as our group walked down the middle of the street like we owned it. "It's crazy how much our family has grown in the past few years. But here's a thought… What if Dante has a baby?"
Rory started laughing when I groaned. But as I caught a whiff of that new baby smell as I carried my daughter, I knew I wouldn't deny my pops of having this again.
"All I know is, I'm not making my kid call someone aunt or uncle when they're younger than her."
Rory leaned into me. "However it turns out, everything will be fine in the end. Your family has too much love for each other to have things go badly."
"That's true, Irish. But I still say I won the lottery with you. My mate is better than—" I looked up at the sky and yelled—"everybody!"
Ciara startled and began crying. I winced and kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry, baby girl. Daddy didn't mean to scare you. You see, once upon a time your daddy was very lonely. And then one day, he smelled something amazing…"
She calmed down as I told her the story of me and Rory. It was probably the sound of my voice, but I preferred to think it was the story itself. A story that I planned to tell her over and over as she grew up so she'd never give up on finding her own perfectly fated mate.
But not until she was at least thirty.
Maybe thirty-five.
Hmm… I'd have to think about that one.
