Author: Winter Travers

I rolled my eyes and plopped Christy’s piece down. “Seeing as there is more than half of the pan left, I think you’ll have more than a few scraps.”

He held out another plate and smiled. “I’ll take mine right now seeing as I’ve seen how much you Jensen’s can eat in one sitting.”

“You are such a dick,” I laughed. I scraped the small pieces and parts that oozed out and scooped it out onto his plate. “Enjoy,” I smirked.

Susan crowed in delight, and Christy had a huge smile on her face. “I think she might be the one to give you a run for your money, Brooks.”

He set the two plates down in front of Christy and where he had been sitting and grabbed the whole platter of bread. “I think you might be right, Mom, but I’m going to be the one with all of the bread until she stops holding the lasagna hostage.”

He knew my weakness. He had taken the carbs and wasn’t going to give them up until I filled his plate.

So he wanted more, did he? I grabbed his plate, walked back over to the pan, and set it down. I cut a piece half the size I had given Susan, and set it on the plate.

“That’s still not enough,” he called.

Oh, I had a feeling it was going to be more than enough. I tugged a hot pad onto my hand and picked up the pan. I walked around the island, set the pan where his plate had been, and stuck his fork in it. “How about that for a big piece?”

I chucked the hot pad at his head and dove to grab the platter of bread from his hand. He ducked to miss the hot pad, and I was able to get my hands on the platter to wrestle it away from him.

“Ah ha!” I shouted with the platter raised above my head. “I am victorious!”

Christy and Susan roared with laughter, and Brooks just crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head. “You’re gonna pay for that later, doll.”

I rolled my eyes and flipped him off. “Bring it.”

Brooks looked at his mom and shook his head. “I can’t take you anywhere, can I?”

I put away my finger and felt my cheeks heat. “Sorry, Christy.”

She scoffed and waved her hand at me. “You have no idea how many times I flipped Brooks’ dad off behind his back. It gets kind of fun after a while to see how many times you can do it before they see.”

“Mom,” Brooks scolded her. “He would have flipped his lid if he caught you.”

She rolled her eyes and picked up her fork. “Before I had my stroke, your father cowered in his boots if he pushed me too far. He just never let it happen when you were around.”

Brooks snagged a piece of bread off the platter and winked at me. He sat down next to his mom and looked down at the pan. “If you think I won’t eat my dinner out of this, then you are sorely mistaken, Miss Jensen.”

I grabbed a fork from the drawer and wound up like I was going to chuck it at him. Susan gasped, and a look of delight crossed Christy’s face.

Brooks and I were delivering on being entertaining tonight.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you, doll,” he warned.

I lowered my arm and gently tossed the fork in front of him. “I kind of like you not bleeding.” I grabbed a plate and handed it to him. “Though you do test my patience.”

He handed me the fork I tossed but didn’t let it go when I grabbed it. “I think the whole world might test that patience, doll.”

“Such a dick,” I muttered.

We managed to make it through dinner without me calling Brooks a dick or trying to maim him with any of the kitchen appliances or knives. Susan and Christy kept the conversation lively while Brooks and I ate and listened most of the time.

Christy rose form the table and looked over her shoulder at me and Brooks while she rinsed her plate. “Why don’t you and Frankie go out for the night? Susan is here so you don’t need to worry about me, Brooks.”

Brooks shifted uncomfortably next to me. “Nah, we don’t need to do that. Frankie and I can hang out with you and Susan.”

I was fine with whatever Brooks wanted to do. I understood why he didn’t want to leave his mom unless he had to.

“Yeah,” Susan chimed in. “Because you know Frankie loves hanging out with two old ladies and a hottie.”

“Brooks, don’t make me have to kick you out of this house.”

Susan grabbed my plate and winked. She mouthed “have fun,” and I couldn’t help but laugh. While Susan and Christy thought Brooks and I were entertaining, I thought the same thing about her and Christy.

“Last I checked, this was my house, Ma.”

“And last I checked, I was the one who gave you life, so you can take your girlfriend out for a couple of hours and not worry about me,” she insisted. There was that hidden sass.

Brooks looked at me and shrugged. “Wanna go for a drive?”

I couldn't help but laugh. “You drive for a living, and your idea of a good time is going for a drive.” I looked at Christy. “Your son is too much.”

“He’s got a little bit of his father in him. He’s got racing in his blood just like he did.”

Brooks grabbed my hand and pulled me out of my chair. “Since they’re kicking me out of my own house, we’re not going to bring them back ice cream.”

“Ice cream?” I chirped.

“Nothing as good as where you’re from, doll, but it’ll do.” We walked to the front door, and he snagged a set of keys from a hook by the door and pulled it open.

Susan and Christy were yelling about wanting ice cream, and we ducked out the door with the promise of bringing them some back.

“Are we really going for ice cream?”

Brooks pulled me over to his car and pushed me against it. His body pinned me, and he lowered his face to mine. “I don’t give a fuck about ice cream right now. All I want to do is kiss you.”

His lips connected with mine, and I didn’t have a second to think. His kiss consumed and dizzied my thoughts with its power. I wound my hands around his neck and tangled my fingers in his hair.

His head slanted, and his lips possessed mine.

I was holding onto him, wishing he would never stop, when his lips released mine. “I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of that mouth.”

My tongue snaked out and licked my lips.

“Shit, you can fuckin’ kiss, doll.” His mouth was on mine again, this time rough and demanding. My hand left his hair and traveled over his neck and down is back. I bunched his shirt up and felt his warm flesh under my fingertips.

I pressed myself against him to feel more and to get more of the kiss. His arms wound tightly against me, and his hand squeezed my ass. My tongue was tangled with his as my hand held his head to mine, and our heads shifted, never able to get enough of each other.

Our tongues danced, our bodies moved, and moans and grunts ripped from both of our lips with each caress and touch.

It was the best kiss I had ever had in my life. With Brooks, everything was different.

Brooks tore his lips away, and I felt his forehead rest against mine before I heard a low growl come from his mouth.

“I don’t know if this is such a good idea,” I gasped.

“Shut up,” he whispered back.

“Am I not allowed to talk?” I laughed.
