Miss the Shot(23)
Author: A. K. Evans

I swallowed hard at the promise in his voice.

I had no doubt Riggs’ plan for making me moan involved a lot more than kissing. I just wasn’t sure if he needed all the extras to make it happen. Kissing alone had the potential to do the trick.

But I didn’t tell him that mostly because I’d reached a point where I really wanted to see how he planned to get the job done.

So, I surprised myself when I returned, “Then I’m looking forward to seeing you reach your goal.”

At that, Riggs groaned into the phone.

A faint laugh escaped my lips. It was easier to be forward over the phone, so I pushed a little harder.

“You sound frustrated, Riggs,” I remarked.

“I am,” he admitted. “If I wasn’t so set on being there with you the first time I make you come, I’d talk you through it right here over the phone.”

As frustrated as Riggs claimed to be, it clearly had no effect on his ability to share his feelings openly with me.

I hadn’t ever had phone sex before, but I wasn’t sure I could continue this particular conversation without wanting to slip my hand under the lace-trimmed waistband of my panties.

“I’m in bed right now and that sounds enticing, Riggs,” I told him. “So, either you need to change the topic or you’ve got to see it through.”

There was silence for a long time. Just as I was about to call his name, he spoke. His voice was husky when he said, “I’m so fucking glad I didn’t miss the shot with you.”

I smiled, loving the way hearing that made me feel.

“Me too,” I whispered.

“I’m not ready to get off the phone with you yet, so I’ll change topics,” he said.

And just like that, he gave me what I needed.

Now, the day was here, and I had to admit that I was struggling not to want to follow through on helping myself out. The conversation from Riggs was still lingering in the back of my mind, and every time I thought about it, the anticipation to have him follow through on everything he teased me about was growing.

When I could no longer wait to see him, I got in my car and made my way to the Donovan Family Farm. It was finally Saturday. I couldn’t believe the day had arrived. In fact, I couldn’t recall ever being so excited for something in all my life. And I couldn’t wait to see Riggs’ family’s farm.

Growing up in a rural town in northeastern Pennsylvania, I’d been accustomed to seeing farmland at nearly every turn. But they weren’t a place I frequented. In fact, the last time I was on a farm was when I was in middle school. One of the girls I went to school with lived on a dairy farm. Our sixth-grade class went to her family’s farm for a school field trip.

I could still remember that trip, and as I pulled into a spot in the lot at the farm, thoughts of that field trip made me wonder about the possibility of bringing my students to Riggs’ farm. It would be the perfect way to end our lesson on the human body. Teaching kids not only about how their body functions but the way that the food they put in those bodies is made was what I considered a valuable lesson.

I made a mental note to ask Riggs about it. If he and his family offered school trips, I’d go back to school and see if I could set it up.

Once I parked, I got out and made my way toward where all the festivities were happening. The place was packed, so I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to find Riggs. He hadn’t mentioned any specific place I’d be able to find him.

While I knew I could call him, I didn’t want to take him away from whatever he was doing. I figured I’d walk around a bit, check it out, and then if I still had no luck, I’d call.

Oddly enough, I felt completely at home as I walked through the crowds of people with children running all over. It felt a bit like school… just a little noisier.

I’d been standing there watching a little girl trying to carry a pumpkin that was three sizes too big for her when something caught my eye. Looking up, I saw what it was.

Apples were being shot out of a cannon into a big open field.

And that’s precisely where Riggs was.

There was a line of children waiting to get their turn behind the cannon. I smiled as I stood there watching Riggs explain to the boy next in line how to aim and fire his apples. It was a side of Riggs I hadn’t seen yet.

I was so lost in watching him that I actually jumped when I heard someone close by call, “Adele?”

Thinking a parent of one of my students was there, I turned toward the sound of the voice and saw a woman I didn’t recognize. Her eyes widened.

“It’s really you,” she marveled.

“Yes,” I answered cautiously. I was generally very good with remembering names. Even in the rare case that I forgot a parent’s name, I always remembered their faces. The woman standing beside me wasn’t a woman I could recall from anywhere.

Her face was positively beaming when she took another step toward me and introduced herself.

“I’m Eden.”

I tipped my head to the side and narrowed my eyes slightly. Now I was even more confused. I definitely did not know anyone by that name.

“I’m sorry, I—” I got out before she cut me off.

“Riggs is my brother.”

This was his sister. As much as Riggs and I talked over the course of the last week, I didn’t know how it was possible that he never told me the names of his siblings.

“It’s so nice to meet you,” I said.

She shook her head, still smiling brightly. “This explains it,” she declared.

“Explains what?” I asked.

“The reason my brother has been in such a good mood all week,” she explained. “I noticed he seemed to have his head in the clouds. I tried to figure out what was going on, but he never let on that he finally went after you. This is so exciting.”

Riggs hadn’t told his family about me, and he hadn’t shared them with me. I wondered why. I didn’t necessarily think he had any bad motives behind it considering he invited me to his family’s farm, but it certainly made me curious.

Eden looked over at Riggs before returning her attention to me. “Did you just get here? Does he know you’re here?”

“I got here a little bit ago,” I started. “I was walking around taking it all in and trying to find him.”

Understanding flashed in her features. “Stay here,” she ordered. “I’ll go relieve him.”

“Oh, it’s okay,” I insisted. “Don’t interrupt him if he’s working.”

“Nonsense. He’s been working his butt off all day. He can take a break for a little while and introduce you to everyone,” Eden suggested.

The next thing I knew she had walked away and was practically bouncing over to the apple cannon to relieve Riggs. I stayed put and watched as she walked up to her brother and started talking to him.

A moment later, his head shot up while his eyes looked in my direction. The second we locked gazes, he grinned.

I couldn’t help but return a smile and a wave.

Riggs stepped out of the way to allow his sister to take over the apple distribution at the cannon. Then he began his walk toward me.

I didn’t know what to expect, but as soon as I was within arm’s reach, Riggs slipped his arms around my waist and pulled me toward him into a hug.
