Promise Me(66)
Author: Ashlee Rose

As you walk in the door of my flat, there’s a little hallway, at the end of the hallway and to the right is a small kitchen area with a breakfast bar which separates the living room from the kitchen. My bedroom is off the living room to the left, and the bathroom is next to my bedroom, opposite the kitchen. It’s not great, but I love it.

I crossed the road and made my way into Starbucks. There Laura was, sitting fresh eyed, looking as beautiful as ever, sipping her coffee. I sat down in front of her and placed my hands around my coffee. I needed this.

“So, how are you?” she said with a smile. “I’ve been better,” I admitted. I didn’t want to bring the Jake story up again, that’s all my life is about. I’m 28, single with a cat and barely got my life together. “What are you and Tyler doing today?” Tyler was Laura’s doting fiancé. He was a hopeless romantic whose world revolved around her. They met back in university, Tyler was a stock broker, Laura was in media. “Not a lot really,” she sipped her white skinny decaf coffee, “we’ve got to go and tie some loose ends up with the groom’s party’s suits, nothing exciting. What about you?” I tried to think up something but nothing popped into my hungover head, “Will probably crawl back to bed and watch a Sex and The City, and maybe do some work that I should have done Friday.” She rolled her eyes at me. Laura got me a job at the magazine company she worked for, You Magazine. When everything happened with Jake, I was an assistant to Jools Hearn. It wasn’t my dream job, but it was work. My dream is to write, whether that be blogging, columns for magazines, or even a book.

My foot is in the door here which is great, but my boss is hard on me. I quickly changed the subject, “Not long till the wedding! When are our final fittings for the bridesmaid dresses?” She was tapping away on her phone tutting to herself “Next Saturday, I managed to get us in a week earlier, is that good for you?”

I told her of course it was fine. I can’t believe her and Tyler are getting married in six weeks. They have chosen a beautiful venue back up near Elsworth. Laura wanted to be back near home with her family.

“Have you found a plus one yet?” she chirped. I gave her the look, the look that she knew very well. “It’s okay, we have six weeks to find you a date. I can’t cancel the numbers now, I sort of kept your plus one in case you got back with Jake.” I nearly choked on my coffee, “sorry, what?” She looked into her cup, “well, I did. I thought you would take him back, I mean his is the only guy you have ever loved, the only guy you have ever – you know… had sex with…” I scowled, “so what?” She gave me an apologetic look. “Freya, I didn’t mean it like that!” I finished my coffee and slammed the mug down on the table. “I’m going, I’ve got work to do before the dragon fires my arse, then I will be jobless as well as boyfriend-less.” She went to stand up and stop me, but she knows me too well. She sat back down in her seat and threw her head back. I didn’t even look at her. I picked my tatty bag up, threw it over my shoulder and stormed out of Starbucks. I am such a diva at times.
