Logan whistles as he pulls into the parking spot. “This is incredible.”
“I’m so excited, and it’s not even Christmas yet!” I squeal as we climb out of the car.
I smile at a couple getting out of their own vehicle a few spots away. The woman is tiny. Her knee-high boots almost touch her long winter coat. She smiles back before lifting a cat carrier out of the backseat.
Uh oh. I whirl back to the car, recognizing the danger too late. Bean bounds out of my open door, sniffs the air, and zeroes in on the cat carrier. She darts over, barking excitedly, and sticks her nose almost into the bars of the carrier. The woman tries to lift the carrier out of Bean’s reach, but she has trouble getting it out of Bean’s vertical leap range.
I run over and leash my dog, spewing apologies. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t expecting another animal in the parking lot. I should have had her on her leash right away.”
“That’s okay,” the woman says once I get Bean under control. She pushes her glasses up her nose and glances at her cat. “Fluffernutter isn’t used to dogs. Cats, yes, but not dogs.” She pauses. “I’m Beatrix and this is Sebastian.” The guy, dark haired and tan, says hello. “And Fluff, of course. Are you here for the wedding?”
“Yes! Travis and Amelia are finally tying the knot.” I bounce on my toes. Logan walks over, and I introduce the three of us.
Beatrix smiles. “It’s been a long time coming.”
Our heads, Bean’s and Fluff’s included, swivel at the sound of shrill, excited barking coming from the ranch. Three dachshunds tear out of the lodge doors and sprint toward us.
I hold Bean close and Sebastian takes the cat carrier, holding it high to keep it out of reach as the dogs race around our feet, barking feverishly. I’m thrilled to be here with Logan, but a little worry has crept in now that we’re here.
Will this be the romantic weekend that Travis and Amelia deserve . . . or a wedding circus of epic proportions?
