Blackstone (Four Fathers #1)(12)
Author: J.D. Hollyfield

“I hear you giggling, what are you up to?”

His eyes slowly open. God, put eyes on the list of magical features. “I was just thinking of ideas on how to wake you up, but you looked so peaceful, I was starting to feel guilty for all the ways I was going to ruin that for you.” He turns to his side, no doubt offering me a fantastic view of his scrunched pecs. Yum.

“And what did you have in mind?” he asks, his voice still hoarse from sleep, and so, so sexy.

I smile like a little girl, embarrassed to put a voice to the ideas floating around in my head. They’re pretty naughty. I open my mouth to start with a PG-rated idea when his phone goes off. That damn thing has been going off all morning.

“Someone misses you. That’s like the fifth time it’s gone off.”

He turns, finding the clock on the nightstand. “Fuck.” He sits up, grabbing his phone.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” He scrolls through the missed calls. “I seemed to have slept is all.”

I laugh. “Is that a new thing?” I was under the impression all humans slept.

“Uh, yeah. I—I have trouble sleeping.” He continues to scroll, then puts his phone to his ear to listen to a voicemail. “Shit.”

“Are you in trouble? Did you need to go into work?”

He looks at me, gifting me that sly smile. “I'd be lying if I said Eric doesn't sound pissed. I missed the morning meeting for our new warehouse.” He drops his phone and tackles me. My back hits the mattress as his body covers mine. “But he can wait. I have more important things to take care of.” He brings his lips down on mine and offers me the best good morning kiss ever.

I throw my wrinkled summer dress back on, minus my underwear since they didn’t make it last night. Trevor hits the bathroom, telling me he’ll meet me in the kitchen. He claims to be a pretty good cook, so a breakfast of champions is in order. This I’m excited for since I’m starving.

I walk out into the foyer, enjoying how awesome the house is. It reminds me of this show I’m obsessed with on HGTV, Million Dollar Listing. I take out my phone and snap a few pictures to send to Katie. She would never believe the house I’m in. I take one of the chandelier, betting it’s real crystal and costs more than I’ll make in a lifetime, when the front door opens.

“Honey, that top looks great on you. Your boob job is healing nicely.”

I watch in confusion as two women barge into Trevor’s house. “Uh…hi, can I help you?” I ask, hoping they have the wrong house. Getting a better look, they do seem familiar. The two women Trevor had over the other morning.

“Oh, we’re here for Trevor. Are you renting one of his houses? They’re all great locations. The beach at night is lovely.” They walk past me and through the kitchen to the back deck.

And that’s why he’s single. Because he’s a playboy.

Idiot.

What was I thinking? You weren’t, dummy. You were just a lay. To each their own, I guess.

I decide to bypass breakfast. He seems like he’ll have his hands full. Walking out of his house and across the way, I unlock the door to my tiny shoebox of a home and slam it shut. What a prick. I wasn’t into him anyway. A dick is just a dick—

I jump at the sudden intrusion of my front door opening and turn to see Trevor barreling through. “Jesus, knock much?” I walk away, heading toward the kitchen.

“Why’d you leave?”

“Uh, seriously?”

“Yeah, seriously.” He’s right behind me.

“Dude, your gang bang arrived. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression last night, but I’m not into that kinda shit.”

He stops me by grabbing my shoulder. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Trevor, it’s cool. I get it. We’re just fucking. Nothing else. I don’t care what else or who else you screw, but I’m not into orgies.” I don’t think. He looks confused. “The two women who came over? Bimbo Barbie and her little skipper?”

“Darlene?"

He even says her name like it’s no big deal. God, I’m so stupid. “Sure. But for real, I have stuff to do today. Burial for Herald…or Bill. So, if you don’t mind—”

“Lucy, Darlene's my ex-wife.”

Oh, this is news. “You were married?” Maybe something he could have mentioned.

“Was. Keyword.”

Great, so he’s banging his ex. Doesn’t help him any.

“Okay, well…great. Anything else?”

“Yeah, the other one is her girlfriend.”

Wait. Step back. “Girlfriend?”

“Yeah, as in lover. She’s a fucking dyke. Loves pussy now. Hence why we’re divorced.”

Gotta admit, I didn’t see that one coming. “Are you still—”

“Hung up on her? Fuck no. We’ve been divorced for five years now. And our marriage was done before that. She comes over with Kiki to use the beach. And I guess now is a good time to tell you we have a kid together.” Jesus! “Is that a problem for you?”

“So, you’re not having a gang bang with your ex and her lesbian lover?”

“Fuck no.”

“And you have a kid.”

“Yes.”

Not what I was expecting to hear. I mean, how’s that gotta feel being left for a chick? Ouch. And the kid thing? It shouldn’t shock me. He is old enough to have a child. And does it bother me? I guess not. As long as I don’t have to be its mommy. “No. I don’t see that as a problem.”

“Good. Anything else you want to hash out or ask me?”

Possibly who the woman was the other day. But that makes me seem like some jealous girlfriend. And I’m far from that. “Nope. All good.”

He grabs me by the waist, pulling me into him. “Good. Now, about breakfast.”

“Did you want to say a few words?” he asks, that sexy smile on his face.

I look away and down at the burial site. “You two were great lobsters. You brought so much joy to the world. You will be greatly missed.” Yeah, I said two. Poor Bill/Herald kicked it while I was gone. As Trevor took the two lobsters and dug a hole in the back of Gran’s house, I decided I wasn’t one to own pets.

Trevor places a kiss to the top of my head, no doubt laughing at me, and grabs my hand. “Now, let me get some food in you. I plan on working you really hard today. Gonna need those nutrients.”

Trevor takes the day off, and I feel pretty special since he admits it’s the first time he’s taken a day to himself since he’s opened the doors to Four Fathers. I want to high five myself for being so amazing, someone would break a pretty solid record of most consecutive days at work for me. I won’t deny I’m sure my excellent skills in the bedroom, kitchen, beach…uh, shed, have a thing or two to do with it, though.

Since I decline going back to his place to make a family breakfast with his ex, he suggests a small breakfast joint down the shore. The sun’s out and there’s barely a cloud in the sky. Trevor opted for no shoes, so I follow suit. He’s quiet on the walk over, but I’m totally cool with the silence. He’s lost himself in the peacefulness of the ocean, and I can see how. The sound of the waves is calming. We’re walking close enough, our bodies brush against one another. It feels intimate in a way, but then again, I could just be over analyzing it. But there’s no doubt his hand purposely grazes mine every few steps.
