Someday (Every Day #3)(84)
Author: David Levithan

   Then see what happens.

RHIANNON

What I’m learning is that the heart has the capacity to love so many people. I used to think I had to give that capacity to just one person, and never hold back any love for myself. But how wrong I was. I can love A and Alexander and my old friends and my new friends and all of the people A is for one day and all of the people around me who are also trying to throw their weight on the better side of the balance. And I can still have enough love left over for myself, to give me the strength to love all of these other people, to take on some of their burden as they take on some of mine.

Some days I’m up for the challenge.

Some days I need to catch my breath.

   But it’s a long story we’re writing.

Even on the days when it’s hard, I know that someday it will be better.

A

   Day 6359

The important thing to remember is that I am not alone.

On days when it’s hard, I remember I am not alone.

On days when it’s easy, I remember I am not alone.

That is what gets me through.

Every day, it gets me through.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Thank you to my parents, who make all my days brighter. And a special thank you to my mother for titling this book.

Love to all of my family and friends.

Thanks to all of the authors I work with, for their patience.

Same to my co-workers at Scholastic.

Special thanks to all of the friends who shared writing space and/or travels with me as I attempted to pin down this book, including but not limited to Billy Merrell, Nick Eliopulos, Zack Clark, Nico Medina, Derek McCormack, Mike Ross, Libba Bray, Justin Weinberger, Chris Van Etten, Alex Kahler, Kurt Hellerich, Caleb Huett, and Lawrence Uhling.

When I heard that a movie was being made of Every Day, I thought, Oh, I have to finish writing the sequel before I see it so it won’t have any influence on how I envision the story. That did not happen. In fact, they made an entire movie in the time it took me to write a hundred pages. Happily, they made a movie I love, and any influence it had was entirely positive. So I would like to thank my friend Jesse Andrews (aka screenwriter extraordinaire), ace director Michael Sucsy (who saw the heart of the story so clearly), all of the movie’s producers and crew members, the kickass Orion team, and the remarkable actors who brought A to life, especially Angourie Rice, Justice Smith, Lucas Jade Zumann, and Owen Teague.

Very big thanks to Bill Clegg, Simon Toop, David Kambhu, Marion Duvert, and everyone else at The Clegg Agency.

As always, I must acknowledge the graciousness and enthusiasm of everyone at Random House Children’s Books, including (but in no way limited to) Jenny Brown, Barbara Marcus, Mary McCue, Sylvia Al-Mateen, Judith Haut, Adrienne Waintraub, Lisa Nadel, and everyone in the sales, marketing, and production teams. And I’d love to thank everyone at Egmont in the UK, Text in Australia, and all of this book’s other foreign publishers for giving it such a wonderful life outside the US.

Thank you to all the readers who’ve taken these characters to heart.

And to Nancy—all the promises of eternity still hold. May the velvet curtain never be taken down.
