“She’s never going to give up, you know?”

I look over my shoulder to the voice I’ve come to enjoy hearing over the last week – Chris.

I didn’t know this guy existed until I woke up from my surgery and he was asleep in the chair beside my bed. He introduced himself to me as Chris Shawland, Clay’s brother. He was with me when I got shot, sat with me in the ambo, and didn’t leave my side until I told him to. He’s been back every day since, only I’ve told him not to tell anyone, because I don’t want anyone else here.

“You know she’s stubborn, Josh. Wouldn’t it be better to see her, speak to her even?”

I shake my head. “I can’t. Not yet, Chris.”

“Okay. Well, the nurse said you should be getting up for a shower. Bed baths with a pretty nurse not your thing, huh?”

“No. I’m more than capable of showering myself. Did you tell them at the desk that you would do my physical therapy today?”

“I did. However, if you’re here, you need to endure an hour with the appointed therapist. We can do some training at different times throughout the day, but it doesn’t mean you give up on the hour you need to do here. You work just as hard, if not harder.”

“Whatever.” I shake my head.

I get out of the bed and grab clean shorts and a t-shirt. My mom and Chris are keeping me well stocked with everything I need.

“Does everyone not wonder where you are when you disappear for hours on end?”

Chris shrugs. “Yeah. I’ve told my brothers that I’ve taken on a couple of my old clients because they’ve relapsed.”

“And they bought it?”

“Absolutely. I tend to fall back into PT and training sessions when the need arises. I’ve been training with Shay since she came home.”

I look up and see Chris sitting his ass on the window ledge, feet crossed at the ankle.

“How is she doing?”

“Much better. She’s still got the walking aids, but another couple of weeks and we should be able to get rid of them.”

I nod. I’m glad Shay is doing well. She was all I thought about once we got separated in that fucking war camp. My aim was to get out of there to help her, but nothing I did ever let me out of the enemy’s sight.

“You will become one of my soldiers.”

I snigger. “I am a fucking soldier. An American soldier.”

A kick to my stomach knocks me to my knees. The air is kicked out of me, my ribs ache, and my body is giving up.

“You will learn to never answer back! You do as you’re told. Got it.” Another kick to my ribs makes me fall flat to the ground. “Every disobedient word or action that comes from you, we’ll harm your friend. Do you understand?”

“Yes.” I grunt through the pain and try to draw in as much clean air as possible.

“Yes, what?” another kick.

“Yes, sir.”

It kills me to acknowledge them with such regard. They’re scum, but if I’m going to get out of here, I’ll need to act well.

“Tie him in the basement, string him up naked, and take no nonsense. Do whatever you have to in order to get him in line. I take no prisoners. I only have soldiers here.”

I’m dragged to my feet by my hair, struggling to move or breathe, but I’m dragged along with whoever I’m meant to be with.

I’ll get us out of here, Shay.

“Earth to Josh.”

I blink a few times and see Chris bending down to look me in the eye.

“Sorry,” I croak breathlessly.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.” I stand up and enter the bathroom. I close the door, lock it, and lean my weight against it. It’s only the door that’s keeping me upright.

I’ll only be able to see Shay when I can talk about her without sending myself into a painful memory.
