Formula (The Driven World)(48)
Author: J.M. Kelley

“That’s what the little jokester stick from the drugstore says.”

“Ho. Ly. Shit!” She sprints across the tiny kitchen, engulfing my placid body into her arms. “This is fucking fantastic. Kiely’s going to be a big sister. I’m going to be an aunt. I'm going the best godmother. I am going to be the godmother, right? We need to go shopping.”

“Lord, help me.” My eyes look toward the heavens.

“Does Jace know yet?”

“No. And don’t say a word until I tell him tonight.”

“I can’t believe it. This is wonderful.” She cocks her head to the side. “I thought you were on birth control?”

“I was on the pill. It wasn’t supposed to happen. Apparently, you're not supposed to leave your pill packet on the window ledge…in the sun. Who knew, heat makes them lose their effectiveness?” Not this girl.

“Maybe your fiancé/bodyguard/Marine has Superman sperm.”

“Please don’t talk about Jace’s Superman sperm. Now, who’s being weird?”

Honk! Honk!

As if on cue, Jace’s horn sounds, alerting us he’s out front to pick us up. His horn usually doesn’t sound loud and strange like that. Something must be wrong with it; I ponder as I stare at my empty kitchen one last time.

“Holy Godzilla on a playground! Come see this.” My sister’s voice booms from the front porch.

“What in the…” I’m going to kill him. I glare out the window, slow blinking at the humongous decked out black and silver motor home parked in my driveway.

Crossing his arms over his chest, Jace stands next to the RV wearing a beaming smile, looking incredibly handsome and mighty pleased with himself. Damn, he’s so hot. Focus, Charlotte.

After another few seconds of ogling him—a habit I can’t seem to break—I march outside calm and collected. I need to get to the bottom of this…monstrosity, sitting in my driveway.

“What the hell is this, Jace?” I dart across the lawn toward him.

He smiles wide as soon as he sees me. “It’s an RV, babe.”

“I can see that.” I roll my eyes at him. “I mean, whose RV is it, and why is it in the driveway?”

“It’s ours. Isn’t she awesome.”

“Ours?”

“Well, really yours. It’s an early wedding present.”

“Mine?”

“Yes, silly. You’re the girl I’m marrying.” He pulls me into a hug, kissing me long and hard.

I back away, trying to regain my senses. “Why?”

“I remembered what you said that day at the zoo, and with the new season starting soon.” He shrugs.

I remember that awful day. The one I’m always trying to shove out of my mind. Then it hits me. What I told him when we were sitting on the bench, watching Kiely. How it was my dream to travel across the country with my family to races. “Jace,” His name is a whisper from my lips. I glance over at Lilly taking pictures with her phone, grinning like a fool. Little shit.

“Come on.” He snags me by the hand, tugging me toward the door on the other side. “Wait until you see this, baby.”

“Are you crazy? How expensive was this thing?”

“Let me worry about that. I make a little money too.”

“I can’t believe you did this,” I mutter, as Jace ushers me inside.

My eyes grow round like saucers as I survey the clean, sleek inside with shiny caramel-colored wood floors. I’m surprised at how spacious it is. The light oak cabinetry, mixed with dark granite counter space, gives it a posh feel. It’s way nicer than most people’s homes.

“This thing is so damn badass. It’s like the Liam Neeson of motor homes,” Jace boasts, looking mighty proud. I’m waiting for him to start beating his chest with his fists. “What do you think?”

Now I get to burst his bubble and tell him I won’t be racing anymore. “I’m going to be sick.” I plop down on one of the two white leather couches, wrapping my arms around myself.

“What’s wrong?” Jace scratches his hand over his stubble. He sits down next to me and wraps his arm around my shoulders.

“Sorry.” I wave my hand, trying to take deep, calming breaths. “Give me a second.”

“Let me get you some water.” He rushes over to the kitchen area and pulls out a bottle of water from the fridge. “Here.” He twists off the cap and hands me the bottle before settling on the couch next to me. “Take tiny sips.”

“Thanks. I’m better now.” I place the water on the small side table, staring at the enormous flat-screen TV across from me.

“You hate it.” Jace frowns.

“It’s a little obnoxious.” I grin. “I love it.”

“It is pretty fucking amazing.” His eyes sparkle as he shoots me a sexy boyish grin.

“You’re amazing.” I cup his cheek. I love him so much. The fact he supports me in following my dreams makes me love him more.

“Wait until you see the massive, private bedroom in the back.” He wiggles his eyebrows, causing me to chuckle.

“I guess this makes us official,” I say with a laugh. “Now that we have a house and motor home together.”

“I guess so.” He grins, not looking sorry one bit.

“How do you feel about that? Being official.”

“Baby, you know I want everything with you.”

“What if we had to maybe…rush things?”

“What’s going on? Tell me what’s bothering you.”

“I’m pregnant,” I blurt.

His eyes widen. He’s silent for a moment. “Pregnant?” He blinks rapidly. The word rolling off his tongue makes it sound like a blessing.

“Mhmm.” I nod, nibbling on my lip, gauging his reaction. “What are you thinking?”

“I’m thinking how much I fucking love you.”

“You're not upset?”

“Upset?” He leans back on the couch, pulling me over his lap, so I’m straddling him. “I’m fucking ecstatic.” His hands wrap around my waist and he presses a tender kiss to my lips. “Question is…are you upset?” He continues to study my face.

I wrap my arms around his neck. “I’m not…upset,” I choke out, feeling my eyes start to well up with tears. “I’m a little shocked. But I’m happy.”

“What about your dreams? What about racing?” He’s doubting my happiness, and I’m fucking this all up.

”Obviously, I won’t be racing anymore. But I want this with you. Don’t doubt it.” I wave my hand around the massive gift he bought, thinking he would follow me around the country. “You’re my dream, Jace. My everything.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know yet,” I sigh. “Colton says there are plenty of jobs for me, but actually, I’ve been talking a lot with Rylee about the work she does with Corporate Cares. I like it. I have time to think about things. I just know it doesn’t matter what I do as long as I have you. I’m looking forward to a regular, boring life with you.”

“I can’t believe we’re having a baby. Kiely is going to flip her shit.” Jace holds my cheeks, kissing me senseless. “What’s wrong?” He pulls away.
