That beaming grin of mine comes out. I cup her face with my hands. “Are you sure?”
“I am. I really am. You are such a great father, Lucas, and I want to experience it with you, everything. Let’s at least try, and fate will decide if a baby is in our cards or not. And I know we could wait until after the wedding, but we don’t need to wait. We’ve been together for a while now—”
I kiss her to silence her. It’s true, in two months we are having a small wedding inside Matchbox. Abby’s cousin Avery is making the cake since she moved to Sage Creek. Jake, Leo, Jess, and Max – the whole group are going to be there. My brother even has a girlfriend so I’m hoping my mother stays tame about her interpretation of how the honeymoon should go and focuses on Nate.
“Abby, if you really want to try then I really am happy that you came to me.” I give her a devilish grin as she leans back and brings her knees wide.
“Just get the job done, Lucas, or I might have to give you a bad review as your patient,” she taunts.
I laugh, and two minutes later, Abby is birth-control free. Who knew removing your fiancée’s birth control could be so hot? I kiss her and hold her.
“Tonight, I guess we have plans.” I wiggle my eyes at her.
“Oh, for sure. I am meeting your mother now and she is insistent that we go shopping together… we know what that means,” she teases.
“Lucky me.”
Abby walks to the door and glances back over her shoulder at me.
There’s a soothing pause.
“I just realized that we met again when you came to my exam table,” she recalls the time I came to her so she could save my parents’ dog. It’s where I met adult Dr. Call.
I give her a soft look. “And here we are with you on my exam table,” I comment.
This is where we are now. A few years later and she is my soon-to-be wife.
“See you at home, Dr. Kade.” She winks before she walks away.
“See you at home, Dr. Call soon to be Kade,” I reply.
“Am I changing my name?” she teases me again before waving me off.
