“I have someone I’d like to hire as an assistant,” she said. “Her name is Ila Jennings. She’s just graduated college and is interested in community development.”

“Great,” Kirk said. “If we can arrange some meetings with several of these candidates, we can get your staff set up. In the meantime, I’ve hired contractors to oversee the office setup.” He passed her the stack of papers with red signature flags. “Sign all these and you’ll be official.”

Several minutes and multiple hand cramps later, she was done. Kirk offered her his hand and smiled. “Congratulations on your first non-profit, Parker.”

She squealed and kissed Ryan. “This is so exciting. Grandpa would be so proud.”

“I’m sure he would, love,” Ryan grinned, hugging her to his side.

Kirk’s brows flew up. “Speaking of your grandfather. My senior partner would like to speak to you. If you have a moment?”

“Sure.”

Kirk left the room, and Parker turned to Ryan. “What do you think is wrong?”

“Something doesn’t have to be wrong, sweetheart.”

She frowned, worrying her lip and hoping that whatever the partner had to say wouldn’t dampen her day.”

A moment later, the door opened, and an older man walked in with an envelope.

“Ms. Nolan, this is Conrad Erikson, our senior partner, and your grandfather’s old lawyer.”

She shook his hand. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Erikson.”

Conrad smiled warmly at her. “We’ve met but I doubt you’d remember me. It’s been years. I have become aware that you’re getting married.”

She glanced at Ryan with a smile. “Yes.”

“Very good.” He opened the envelope and pulled out two sheets of paper. “These are for you.”

“What is it,” she tried to understand the legal wording of the document. “It’s about the Parker Nolan Foundation.”

“Yes. Your grandfather had a feeling your parents wouldn’t live up to his hope that they hand you the foundation. So he made separate arrangements for it.”

Her eyes widened. “What?”

“Once you’ve married, the foundation becomes yours. Not your husband’s. Not your parents’. Yours.”

She gasped and glanced at Ryan. “I don’t understand. Why would he wait to do that until I married?”

“I can’t say. I guess he worried that your parents were and would always try to keep their control over you with the foundation.” He nodded. “Either way, those are yours. Once you’ve married, please come back, and we’ll do the transfer of ownership. The Parker Nolan Foundation belongs to you.”

“You mean, it’s really mine?” She blinked.

“Yes, dear. All yours.”

“That’s all we needed for today,” Kirk said. “I’ll be in touch with you on meetings with candidates to be part of your board.”

She nodded absently and watched as men walked out of the room. With a sigh, she sat back and shook her head. “What do I do now?”

Ryan rubbed her hand in his. “Whatever you want to do.”

Then it dawned on her that she could help even more people. It was going to take time and work, but she didn’t mind busting her ass to give back. It would be what her grandfather would’ve wanted.

Eventually, she’d figure out how to hand off a lot of work to her staff. She watched Ryan staring at her intently. After all, they had a family to start.

“Don’t worry,” she grinned. “Our family is number one. Nothing will ever change that.”

“I know, love,” Ryan said sweetly.

If her grandfather taught her anything, it was that family always came first. She had him to thank, and she would be in his debt forever for the love and support he gave her. She wanted to create that with Ryan. Her own family. Have children and show them how good it felt to be a part of a giving and caring community. Children. Her heart filled with love and happiness. She could barely wait.

He stood and pulled her to her feet, cupping her face and kissing her. “Congrats, Ms. Nolan, on your new foundation.”

“Soon-to-be Mrs. Wade,” she whispered against his lips. “Now let’s go give Harry his retirement gift.” Harry was about to be spoiled rotten, and she felt happy she could do that for him. Elders were the foundation of society. They needed to be appreciated and cared for.

“You’re insane,” he chuckled. “But I wouldn’t trade you for all the gold in the world. You’re priceless,” he said, gazing deep in her eyes. “Priceless.”

Good thing he thought so. He was about to be tested with wedding plans.
