Love Like Her (Against All Odds #3)(41)
Author: Claudia Y. Burgoa

If I had time, I’d go down to figure out what’s bothering her. I can’t. Nate’s plane is landing soon, and I don’t want them to wait. After that, I have to find Liv. We need to straighten things out because she deserves better than the lies she heard today.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Eros

When I arrive at Nyx’s place, I spot Persy’s SUV. Instead of going down, I text Nate.

Eros: Do you need me to pick you up, or are THEY staging an intervention?

Nate: We needed you to pick us up, but we assumed it wasn’t happening. You were with Misty. Ford picked us up.

Nate: That’s why they are staging the intervention.

Eros: They’re staging an intervention because I couldn’t pick you up?

Nate: No, they are doing it because you’re obsessed with Misty.

Eros: I wouldn’t call it an obsession.

Nate: That’s between you and your sisters. You leave us out of it. I told you to leave it alone.

Eros: I like your twin better.

Nate: You say that now, but when you need my plane, all I hear is, you’re my favorite brother-in-law.

Eros: Can I borrow your plane to go to China?

Nate: You have nowhere to run. Those two will catch you.

I jolt when someone knocks on my window. It’s Persy.

I turn off the engine, unbuckle my seatbelt, and leave the car.

“You’re back!” Persy embraces me, and I hug her back.

“It’s good to see you, but what happened to we never lie to each other?” I point at the house. “They’re already here. I’m killing myself to make it on time.”

“Your tone of voice told me you weren’t alone,” she states. “You’d be mad if I had said, ‘Hey, we want to talk to you about this Misty issue.’”

I laugh. “According to her, you are my issue.”

Persy frowns and crosses her arms. “Interesting. She sees your family as your problem. I wonder if she’s projecting herself.”

My sister, the psychologist, is pretty chill. She doesn’t over-analyze shit, but there are exceptions to her usual behavior. I can see her asking me more about my conversation with Misty. I’ll have to describe the tone of voice we used, the exact words, and what led us to that moment. She’s going to call me often so we can go through Misty’s words until she comes up with a satisfactory answer that proves Misty’s statement wrong.

She doesn’t need to spend days thinking about this nonsense. I’m aware that my sisters aren’t my problem. They’re annoying, but I wouldn’t have them any other way. Their husbands might say I’m the problem since Persy and Nyx pause their lives to organize ridiculous interventions. They expect me to stop my reckless behavior, learn, and grow.

Since I’m going to endure a couple of hours with them pointing out how my love life is a disaster, I plan on giving them a hard time too.

“You know she’s right, Persephone,” I claim. “I could be going on with my Saturday. Instead, I interrupt everything to follow your fake instructions.”

“You could’ve said no.”

“Where are my girls?” I ignore her, going inside the house.

Nova and Leah are my two most favorite people in the world. I adore my sisters, but the tiny versions of them are a lot more fun.

The only person in the house is Nyx.

“Nova, Leah,” I call out for them.

“They’re on their way to Persy’s house,” Nyx answers.

“Seriously?”

“We have a new playroom. Mom and Dad are going to babysit them. Remember tonight’s dinner?” Persy glares at me.

What is she talking about? Fuck, did I agree to do something tonight?

“Plus, you won’t have an excuse to ignore us,” Nyx adds.

I glare at them. “You’re annoying.”

Persy takes a seat and pats the couch. “Come here. We need you to help us understand why you believe Misty is the love of your life.”

“Can we begin with the most obvious question?” Nyx interrupts us. “Why break up this engagement—again?”

I hate the inflection on the last word. For starters, I’m not breaking up shit. I had no idea she was back with the asshole. Then there’s Liv. I have more pressing matters to fix than sitting down with these two and discussing Misty. Lastly, if they want to play who is right, I’ll make her spend hours yapping about nonsense while I contradict them. Let’s see who is better at this game.

My love life is my problem, not theirs.

Instead of sitting next to Persy, I choose the chair. I set my feet on top of the ottoman and look at them. “I didn’t break their last engagement.”

“No, but it’s right when she’s back to planning the wedding when you want to make your move,” Persy states. “Why not before?”

“I wasn’t ready. You guys fell in love and got married when your lives were steady.”

Both look at each other and snort.

“As if,” Nyx says.

“I had lost my job. My former employer threatened to disbar me, and I was pregnant with Edward Bryant’s child when I met Nate,” she pauses and gives me an eye roll before saying, “Sure, let’s call it a steady life.”

“So, you’re not in love with her,” Persy states.

“What?”

“You claim that we didn’t fall in love until…” She licks her lips. “You can’t set falling in love as a goal. It just happens. You think you’re destined to be with Misty because she’s comfortable.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It does,” Nyx supports Persy’s statement. “I’d believe that you’re into Misty if you said you’ve been crazy in love with her for years, but the circumstances have made it impossible for you until now.”

“That’s exactly it,” I claim. “I was too busy to notice her.”

Which is partially true, or maybe it’s not. I don’t care anymore. I just won’t agree with them—at all.

“No, no, no,” Persy says, her voice is almost a squeak. Obviously, I’m frustrating as fuck.

She sits down straight, places her palms on her thighs, and looks at me intently.

“You can’t invalidate my feelings because they don’t make sense to you, Persephone.” See, I can say fancy words like a therapist. Take that, Persy.

She arches an eyebrow and crosses her arms. “So, you love her.”

“What kind of question is that?” I lower my feet to the ground and stare at them, appalled. “Of course, I do. She’s one of my best friends. Who else could be as perfect as she is?”

Liv, but that’s never going to happen. Listen, I know they’re right in some way, but if they want to have this ridiculous intervention, I’m going to give them hell.

Persy blinks twice. “Tsk, tsk, tsk. You seriously think that’s enough. She’s my best friend, therefore we’ll make the relationship work.”

“When you’re in love, you feel passionate about that person. You can’t imagine your life without her. In fact, you look for an excuse to call, text, or videoconference her,” Nyx explains. “Neither one of you would care if you lived in a tent down in Costa Rica or a one-bedroom apartment downtown—as long as the two of you are together.”
