“Yes, yes, one way or another, that boy will do his duty for the country.” Lady Ursaline waves a hand, disrupting Elvis again. “All's well that ends well.”
“Don’t you mean Much Ado About Nothing?” Lady Drey murmurs, smoothing her parrot’s feathers.
Lady Ursaline doesn’t seem to hear. “But that’s not why I called on you, Tiffy.”
“Yes, you sounded quite put out on the phone. Do tell, Teddy. I will do all I can to help.”
“Well, as you know, the queen’s pregnancy is progressing nicely. But there’s still a matter of succession, at least until her progeny comes of age.”
“Yes, I heard. The Marquis of Dupree is next in line?”
“Yes. Franz. But he is quite unfit. Not at all like his brother Benedict, except, well, Franz is legitimate. I must groom young Franz into someone more presentable. More suited to the throne.”
“Ah, yes.” Lady Drey nods as she feeds Elvis a cookie. “And what will you do to rehabilitate him?”
“My dear Tiffy,” Lady Ursaline pulls a folder out of her oversized purse, “I am so glad you asked.”
Lady Drey plucks her spectacles from the table and sets them on the end of her nose, leaning in to study the photographs Lady Ursuline has spread out beside the tea tower.
“There’s not a man or woman Franz listens to or respects in this kingdom.” Lady Ursuline plants a finger on the photograph beside a young woman’s face. “Except her.”
“Who is she?”
“An art student working as a governess. Teaching the children of the Head of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. She’s lovely. And wise.”
Lady Drey looks up to smile at her oldest and dearest friend. “I see you have a plan, Teddy.”
Lady Ursuline chuckles. “Oh, yes.” She holds up the photograph of the young woman. “And my plans all revolve around her…”
