This is so hard. It’s like I’m being pulled in two different directions. My brain says go, but my heart says stay.
“But I don’t have to go to Santa Fe! I’m really liking Mae’d…”
That’s a half-truth. In actuality, I’m still really stressed about it, and I’m beginning to think I don’t have what it takes to run a real business. But I don’t want to leave if Austin and I are just starting to pursue a thing and he’s going to have his own restaurant. “Maybe I could be a hostess at your place?” I say, hopefully.
“Uh, actually. I was going to say I think you should take the job in Santa Fe. These kinds of opportunities don’t just come up.”
“But what about….” I don’t want to be too presumptuous. “Our garden.”
“I can look after our garden, believe it or not, on my own.” He knows what I really meant, though. It’s written all over his face in bold letters. “Our…friendship will survive across miles.”
Friendship? Was that a euphemism? Was that a hint that he doesn’t want to deal with all the risks after all? We finish our breakfast in silence, and by the time I get the courage to ask, he stands and moves to the counter to place his dish in the sink. “I have to run to the garden center and pick up some fertilizer. It’s supposed to drizzle later, so I want to get that down and transplant all the starters first.”
“Okay,” I say instead of all the questions swirling in my head.
And when he leaves, I’m left wondering what just happened.
And then Logan calls.
“Hey,” he says. “I saw something that reminded me of you.”
“Really, what was it?”
“We went on this tour and saw the Palace of the Governors. The guy said it was built in 1610 and is the oldest building in the United States. Your cute history facts popped in my mind, and it just seemed like something you’d enjoy.”
“I totally would’ve loved to have seen that.”
“It was cool. I bought you something there that I think you’ll like.”
He tells me Native Americans were selling their wares, and he found a pottery vendor that had amazing vases. It’s sort of swoony how he’s thinking about me. Especially when he says, “Just because you’re dating other people doesn’t mean I’m not going to try to woo you too.”
Unf.
Then he adds, “Have you given your answer to Santa Fe yet?”
“I said I’d tell them Monday.”
“Please say no. Even if you decide you don’t want me as your boyfriend, I don’t think I could stand not having you in my life.”
Whoa. That was real clear. Clearer than the conversation with Austin.
“Logan, get your ass off the phone and help me carry the equipment,” someone shouts.
“I gotta run,” he says. “I’ll call you back later.”
When I’m off the phone, I sit at the table and think.
And think.
About Austin. About Logan.
I don’t need to wait until the end of the tour. I already know who I’m choosing.
