Tarnished (Triple Canopy #4)(17)
Author: Riley Edwards

“Because fuck buddies don’t spend the night. They certainly don’t spend two in a row. Besides I need to ice down my vagina and I haven’t done that yet so I’m out of commission for the next few days and you should drink some protein mix or something to get your stamina back up. And…”

I squealed and dropped my phone when my bedroom door opened and Logan walked in.

“How’d you get in?”

“Picked the lock.”

“I have an alarm,” I reminded him.

“Yeah, baby, and who do you think services your system?”

It was mostly dark in my room, the only light coming from the open curtains and the hall light I leave on at night. I wasn’t afraid of the dark or anything, but I was a woman who lived alone, one who was smart enough to have an alarm and not plunge my house in total darkness.

“You think my stamina’s lacking?” he asked.

It was the slight tilt of his head that made him look boyish in a roguish sort of way that made me forget I was pissed at him for breaking into my house. “I think we need to slow this down and give ourselves some recuperation time.”

“Right, because you need to ice your pussy.”

So crass.

My eyes narrowed on him when I answered. “I didn’t say pussy. I believe I said vagina.”

“Right.”

“Can you even say the word vagina?”

“Not without my balls retracting and my dick shriveling up.”

Hm. Maybe we should try that. I was beginning to think a dickless Logan would be the only safe Logan.

You can think that all you want but you know you want Logan for more than his dick.

Stupid conscience.

“Why are you here?”

Stupid question. He was here because he wanted sex.

“I was in bed, tossing and turning, and couldn’t sleep.”

“So you thought, what the hell, I’ll go to Lauren’s, break into her place, and wake her up?”

“Were you sleeping?”

“That’s beside the point.”

“Then what’s the point?” he asked and started walking across the room. “You weren’t asleep.”

“How do you know?”

Logan made it to the foot of the bed and I scooted so I could watch him. He tore his shirt off, shifted from side to side—toeing off his shoes I assumed—next, he pushed down his shorts and his cock sprung free.

He was not erect and I had to admit part of me was disappointed.

“I’ve had two mornings of your cute, sleepy voice. You were wide awake when you answered your phone.”

Did he just say I had a cute morning voice?

In the blink of an eye, Logan was on the bed, pulling the covers back. Another two blinks and he had me tucked close with my head on his chest, and with nowhere else to put it, my arm over his stomach.

I belatedly asked, “What are you doing?”

“Your pussy needs to be iced down and apparently I need protein before I can perform again so we’re going to sleep. But just to say, if you’d like me to demonstrate that my manhood should never be questioned I could get down to business and prove to you no protein is needed.”

Going to sleep?

Logan was spending the night, again?

“Logan!”

His hand shifted through my hair, then his fingers massaged my scalp and I groaned.

“Sleep, beautiful.”

I closed my eyes and said nothing.

What could I say? I was a spineless twit. And a sucker for a scalp massage. Something Logan knew because I’d told him.

Starting tomorrow I was going to wise up. No more sharing. Logan played dirty.

“You’re smiling,” Luke accused.

“What can I say, I enjoy punching shit.”

I steadied the heavy bag and glanced around the gym, pleased this was a solo visit from Luke and he hadn’t brought in reinforcements. Lauren and I had been at work for hours and other than side-eye glances no one had approached me to ask about Friday night. I was surprised it had taken this long before someone cornered me, though it was a Monday and the roster was full of training classes all day.

“Good weekend?”

I stepped away from the bag and pulled my knuckle guards off for no other reason than to make my nosy-ass friend wait.

“That’s how you’re gonna play it? Ask how my weekend was?”

“You didn’t answer your phone or return your texts all weekend.” Luke shrugged. “The way I see it you either spent the weekend nursing your broken heart because Lauren locked you out or you spent the weekend fucking her. I’m on the fence about which one I’m hoping for.”

Something nasty curled in my gut. Of course, I had spent my weekend fucking Lauren, but hearing it come from Luke felt wrong. Lauren wasn’t a fuck. I wasn’t entirely sure what she was, but she definitely was more than a woman I’d picked up with the sole purpose of getting off with and leaving as soon as the mission was accomplished.

“I spent the weekend with Lauren. We were busy.”

I didn’t miss the skepticism in my friend’s stare. He considered Lauren a friend and his protective streak was a mile wide. Hell, every man and woman in this building took loyalty and protection to the extreme. Even knowing Luke was only looking out for a woman who was his friend it pissed me off he thought he had any claim over her.

“Does that mean you pulled your head out of your ass?”

“It means that Lauren and I are adults and what we do outside of work is no one’s business.”

“You haven’t pulled your head out of your ass,” he mumbled. “Does she know?”

“Know what?”

“That you’ll never commit to her. That there won’t be a relationship. That when you’re done with her your shield will go up and you’ll walk away. That you think love’s bullshit and she’ll get nothing from you.”

None of what Luke said should’ve pissed me off. He was right on all accounts. I didn’t commit. I didn’t engage in relationships and when I was done I walked away and never looked back. But the love thing he had wrong.

“For fuck’s sake, for the last damn time, I know that people can love each other. I know what you and Shiloh have is good. I know you love her. But I also know that is something I will never feel. I don’t have it in me. But that doesn’t mean I’m not happy for all you sorry-ass saps that have found it.”

“Does she know, Logan?” he pressed. “Lauren’s not a woman out for a good time, happy to get what she can get and leave with a smile.”

Now I wasn’t pissed, I was inching toward furious.

“I know who Lauren is, brother. I know her better than you. And she knows exactly what we have and what we don’t have.”

It was me who was blurring the lines. It was me who pushed to stay at her place. It was me who broke all the rules Lauren had wanted in place. It was me who laid in bed last night and couldn’t sleep without her.

“Did she tell you about her run-in with Guy? Jace’s report didn’t mention you were with her and I can’t—”

“Come again?”

“Which part? Jace’s reports are always thorough, did he miss you being there?”
