Death’s Realm

River sighed as she softly closed the door to her son’s room after finally getting him to nap. Once Breac had learned to walk, he was everywhere. She spent most of her time chasing him from one place to another. Since he was three-quarters Fae, she knew he had magic. He hadn’t used any—yet. But it was coming. She might be a Halfling, but even though she was part Fae, she had been raised in the human world without any magic.

“You look exhausted.”

She turned at the sound of her husband’s sexy Irish accent, which was so different than her Scottish one. Her gaze met his black-ringed red eyes. He had his shoulder-length, silver-laced black hair pulled into a queue at the base of his neck. He was, by far, the most handsome man she had ever seen.

“The first time I saw you, I was struck by just how enigmatically gorgeous you were,” she told him.

He raised black brows, a slow smile pulling at his lips. “Is that so?”

She nodded and walked to him, letting her fingers caress his hollowed cheek down to the hard line of his jaw. “Oh, yes. I tried to come off like my heart didn’t miss a beat when I saw you, but I don’t think I managed it.”

Kyran wrapped his arms around her. “I couldn’t say since I was too busy looking through the horrible frumpy disguise to your beauty beneath. As if baggy clothes and glasses could hide your stunning face.”

She sighed as he pulled her tightly against him and rested her cheek on his chest as her arms wound around him. River hadn’t truly come alive or begun living until she met Kyran. She hadn’t wanted any part of the Reapers or their problems. But it was as if her destiny had been intertwined with Kyran’s eons ago. And she was thankful for it.

Sure, there had been danger and enemies and more close calls than she was comfortable with, but the one thing she knew above all else was that Kyran loved her and their son.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked as he leaned back and looked at her, concern sparking in his crimson eyes.

River tucked strands of her hair behind her ear. “Nothing.”

He quirked a brow and simply stared at her, waiting. They had a steadfast rule in their relationship: they didn’t keep anything from each other. Ever.

She licked her lips and glanced away. “My pregnancy was a surprise for both of us.”

“Aye,” he replied gently, his gaze never leaving her face.

“I just…” Her stomach felt tied in knots as she bit her lip and pulled out of his arms. River didn’t get far. Kyran tenderly stopped her.

“Babe? What is it? You know you can tell me anything.”

His worry was deepening. This was why she hadn’t brought anything up before now. “Breac is the only child here. Not having other children to be around and play with can harm him. Not only that, but he’s more Fae than human. I’m not sure what to expect as far as what his magic will be or how he’ll use it. We’re safe here. I can’t thank Erith enough for opening her realm to not only her Reapers but also the rest of us.”

“Rest of you?” Kyran flattened his lips. “You’re my mate. My wife. Of course, you and the other mates are welcome.”

She covered her face with her hands as she struggled to put into words the emotions that had begun to grow inside her for weeks. After a deep breath, she let her arms fall to her sides and looked at him. “I need to preface this by saying a lot of what I’m feeling has to do with the Fae Others who are trying to kill you and the other Reapers.” She paused to swallow. “I miss things I took for granted on Earth. I miss celebrating the holidays. I miss setting up a Christmas tree and decorating it. I long to go shopping to find gifts for everyone. I want to see Breac sitting on the floor, tearing open his presents as he hurries to find what’s beneath the paper.”

“Is that all?” Kyran said with a relieved sigh.

She blinked, taken aback by his flippant reply. “Is that all?”

He visibly winced. “I didn’t mean that your feelings aren’t important, sweetheart. I braced myself for you telling me you wanted to leave.”

“Never,” she said and rose on tiptoe to place her lips on his. “My home is wherever you are.”

He rubbed his hands up and down her arms. “How do you want to solve this problem? I can have everything you want with a snap of my fingers.”

“I know.”

“Then why haven’t you asked, love?” he asked, frowning.

River sighed. Why hadn’t she asked? There were a million different reasons. The Reapers had a little respite, but it wouldn’t last long. She didn’t want to take away the slice of time they had to pour her troubles out when they should be enjoying each other. “I’ve just been overwhelmed by a lot of emotions lately.”

“You shouldn’t have kept them to yourself. We promised to talk about everything.”

“You’re right. I thought maybe I was just overthinking things. But the more I kept it to myself, the more it festered.”

He lightly brushed his knuckles against her cheek. “No more of that. We can start on the holiday stuff anytime you want. I was on Earth a long time before I became a Reaper. I should’ve realized you and the other Halflings might be missing home.”
