I stopped, sighed, and gave
Mike a raised eyebrow.
He patted his pockets, looking worried for a second, then brought out his cell phone with a relieved sigh. "I was wondering if I could get your number. Maybe I could call you, and we could do something sometime. If you want."
And woosh! Hope sprang up again like a damned jack-in-the-box. I played it cool though, casually folding my arms over my chest. "You're in Sacramento a lot, are you?"
"I could be." He gave me a flirty grin.
I nodded and bit back a sappy smile. "So… you're asking me on a date? Is that what this is?"
"Glad you figured it out. I thought maybe I was doing it wrong." He held his phone out to me. "Unless you're seeing someone? Or even if you are, we could text now and then. Couldn't we?" He gave me puppy-dog eyes and pouty lips, which made me laugh. He was too charming for his own good. Or mine.
I took the phone and punched in my number. "You're used to getting your way, aren't you?"
"Hey, I'm the youngest of eight. You'd better believe it."
I held out the phone to pass it back. He took it, his fingers lingering for a long moment over mine before withdrawing. "I'll see you soon, Shane." He took a step backward, gaze still locked on mine.
In that moment, he was every hero I'd ever mooned over in a book, my Heathcliff and Mr. Darcy and all the Hallmark swains. Only better, because he was real.
And he was mine.
"See you, Mike Canali," I murmured as he turned and jogged away.
