My gaze locks with hers, and I admire the fire that still burns inside of her. There’s a vicious glint in her eyes that relays the message loud and clear.
Gabbana wants to play.
“Get off of me!” shrieks a woman only about fifty feet away.
But he doesn’t listen. He pushes her into the garbage can and tries to force her dress up on the middle of the sidewalk.
“Stop! Someone help me!”
My decision is made for me.
THE BASEMENT IS DARK, with a winding hallway that hides the room we’re in from anyone who may venture down here by accident. The drunken rapist hangs from the ceiling with his arms above his head, thrashing around as he pleads for us to let him go.
“I’m really sorry,” he cries. “Please. Don’t do this. I’m a good man.”
Torture tools of all shapes and sizes are scattered across the table, waiting to be used and made bloody. Our victim glances over at it and sees his fate right in front of his eyes. His begging stops as he realizes there is nothing he can do.
Saxon and I turn to face each other, and she smirks as we move at once.
Rock.
Paper.
Scissors.
Shoot.

Okay, so real talk for a second.
Writing most of this duet was hard. I’m not even going to sugar coat it or pretend it wasn’t. These characters and their story had so much detail and emotion that went into it. Listening to them and feeling them show me everything, it was overwhelming. I don't think I've ever doubted myself or my writing so much in all the time I've been doing this. I didn't believe I could deliver what you deserved. I didn't think I was capable of writing something so dark and so full of pain, and yet so beautiful at the same time.
I was able to push through with the help of an incredible team promising me I was on the right track. And with my husband, my family, and my friends making sure that I took a break when my anxiety got a little too difficult to handle. And with the patience of my editor and proofreader who are goddesses when it comes to dealing with me and helping make my books perfect.
But the main thing that kept me going were my readers. You believe in me even when I don’t believe in myself all that much, and I’m not sure you know what that means to me. Or how many times I’ve been in the middle of a horrible feeling of imposter syndrome when one of you will say something about one of my characters or email me something you loved in a book of mine.
