Cruel Player(33)
Author: Shae Sullivan

As we spin, I take in the room again. My eyes catch on our football team’s wide receiver. What is Jax McGraw doing here? I thought he only went to football parties. This is distinctly not a football party. Those are usually relatively clean, but there’s a lot more public sex happening in each room. If I had to choose between the two, I’d pick football.

The scenery is usually nicer, too. Jax is hot. He’s tall, with tattoos up and down his arms. He’s not my type by any means, but he’s decent to look like.

I avert my eyes before he, or anyone else, catches me staring. It’s only been a month since Steven and I broke up. I’m not ready for another relationship. I can’t even casually hook up with anyone. That’s never been my style.

The music picks up again. Amy and I finish our slow dance and go back to our fast paced hip movements.

“I need another drink,” I say, waving my empty beer bottle. “Do you need anything?”

Amy gulps down the rest of her punch. “Another one, please!”

I nearly gag. How can she drink that stuff? It smells like straight rubbing alcohol.

I venture into the kitchen to get us each a new drink. I find some fruit punch in the fridge and make Amy a weakened version of her drink. I trust she’s in good hands with her brother, but I want to ease the headache she’s going to have tomorrow. I grab her a bottle of water, too.

When I turn from the fridge, drinks in hand, I nearly drop everything when I see what’s in front of me.

Steven, my ex-boyfriend of just a month, is locking lips with a beautiful woman.

I gasp, unable to stop the sound. The two of them jump and look up, noticing me for the first time.

Steven smiles. “Hey, Codie! It’s good to see you.”

I nod. My hands are full, so I can’t even return his wave.

He gestures to the woman. “This is Jordan, my new girlfriend.”

“Oh. Uh. Hi. It’s nice to meet you.”

Internally, I’m screaming. New girlfriend? How can he have moved on already? Steven doesn’t even go to this school. He graduated last year. Jordan looks vaguely familiar. She must be a student.

I need to think fast. Steven is looking at me with those eyes, the ones that mean he feels bad. Like he thinks I’m a weak little girl who can’t handle that her ex-boyfriend moved on.

I’ll show him. I set the water and the punch down on the table.

A guy is walking by, so I grab him by his arm.

“I have a new boyfriend, too,” I say. Then I pull the stranger in for a kiss.
