The Baby Blitz (Varsity Dads #3)(14)
Author: Lex Martin

“Booze and cake.”

He nods and holds up his empty glass to mine, and we clink. “Booze and cake. That’s romantic shit right there.”

“Absolutely. There’s no resisting it,” I say slowly as I look into his captivating blue eyes.

“As if that’s even possible,” he whispers as he stares at my lips.

The rest of the night is spent dancing and laughing with the bridal party on the dance floor. And while Gramps asks me for a slow dance and Greg takes me for a whirl once, Michael gets the rest of the slow songs.

With the dim lights, a little champagne, and the romantic backdrop, I’m having a hard time keeping my walls up. I have to admit that I’m having more fun with Michael than I’ve had on any date.

Not that this is a date exactly.

Just a truce.

Which reminds me.

“Michael Oliver, did you have groceries delivered to my door via my neighbor, or did I imagine that?” The deer-in-the-headlights expression on his face makes me laugh.

“Will you be mad if I admit that was me?”

“Why would I be mad?”

He shrugs. “You like to do things on your own. Didn’t want to mess with your girl power vibe.” Girl power vibe? “Plus, we’d had that horrible conversation at the store. Didn’t want to upset you again, but at the same time, I couldn’t stop worrying that maybe you needed some groceries.”

I’m momentarily speechless. As we sway to the music, I dust off some lint on his tux. “You know, I baked you a pie and left it on your doorstep to thank you. Did you get it?”

He stops moving. Tilts his head. Growls. “Johnny ate my damn pie!”

His outrage puts another smile on my face. “It probably wasn’t even that good.”

“Everyone knows you’re a damn good cook, Maggie.”

Little flutters fill my belly at the compliment, and I make a mental note to bake him another one.

When Kayla and Joe take off, everyone lines up outside with sparklers. Everyone except for my brother and his bridesmaid, who are probably upstairs getting freaky. Which… I’m not gonna think about. Realizing I overheard Mr. and Mrs. Oliver going at it like animals is enough for me to handle for one weekend.

Finding out it wasn’t Michael and Vanessa banging away sent a shockwave of relief through me. I was ready to deck him for tormenting me like that. It’s always been hard for me to think about him dating other women, but actually hearing it was torture.

Which makes me realize I care about him way more than I should.

I sigh as I watch Joe twirl Kayla between the two rows of sparklers. I want that. Someone who’ll be my person. Someone who doesn’t care how wacky I can be sometimes. Someone who wants me no matter what.

Before Kayla hops in the limo, she yells, “Don’t forget about golf tomorrow. Tee’s at ten. If I’m late, though”—she waves her thumb behind her—“you know why!”

Everyone laughs as we watch them speed away.

A warm hand tugs at my wrist, and I turn to find Michael, who pulls me close. “Wanna hang out?”

Now that everyone is returning to the ballroom or heading home, standing out here in the dark with Michael feels particularly intimate. “What did you have in mind?”

He thinks about it a minute. “I heard there’s a jacuzzi on the back patio. We could go for a midnight swim?”

I laugh and run my finger over his bow tie. “I didn’t bring a swimsuit. Would you have any objection to me taking a dip in my underwear?”

A devilish grin spreads on his lips. “Meet you at the pool in ten?”

This is going to be either the best decision I’ve ever made or the worst.

“See you in ten.”

As the cool air cuts through the wedding fog, reality sets in.

Am I really going to do this? Have some quasi-clothed swim session with Bash’s little sister?

This is Magnolia Morales we’re talking about. Not some football groupie who parties at the house every weekend and wants to let off some steam.

Maggie. Who’s hated me for years.

Stone-cold fox Maggie, who slowly drove me crazy tonight in that little dress of hers.

I’m sitting on the ledge of the jacuzzi, having a crisis of conscience, when the sliding doors to the pool area open.

My mouth goes dry when Maggie steps out of the shadows in a thin robe and a shy smile. She holds out towels in one hand and a bottle of champagne in the other. “Think your sister will mind I snagged a beverage?”

I cough, my throat totally dry. “Not at all.”

Was I dumb enough to question my good luck a moment ago? Because I’d have to be a fucking fool to walk away from this. Thank God for the Texas weather, because if it was any colder, I never would’ve thought to do this.

I pat the ledge next to me. “Water’s warm.”

She hands me the bottle, drops the spare towel, and slowly unwraps herself.

I’m gonna be honest here. I’ve imagined what Maggie would look like unclothed a few times, and my imagination never did her justice.

The robe falls to the ground revealing a pair of gorgeous, high, round breasts, covered in a thin, semi-translucent bra. A curvy waist. A dainty pair of panties in that same thin material. Muscular, smooth thighs.

But then she unwinds her hair from the updo, and it comes tumbling down in a mass of curls.

Jesus Christ. She’s gorgeous. Literally the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

And she’s out here tonight with me.

I lean forward to hide the instant erection tenting my swim trunks.

Before I freak her out with my body’s reaction, I slide into the water. As she dips her toe in, goosebumps break out on her skin, making her nipples stand at attention, and I wonder what it would be like to pull those luscious buds into my mouth. Graze them with my teeth. Lick them until she cried out.
