Together We Stand(54)
Author: J.A. Lafrance

One of the only times she’d ever heard it. Behind the scrubs and the masks and the surgical gloves, nobody had ever made her feel that way. Not once. Nobody ever gave her a second look. Most of her patients she only saw when they were unconscious, but this man was so much more. He could have any woman he wanted. Why he’d chosen her she didn’t know. Was it because she was inaccessible? Because she was too busy for a relationship just like him? All she knew was at that exact moment, she wanted him like she’d never wanted anything else.

“What,” she asked as he leaned into her. He nuzzled her neck. Feeling him against her had her toes curling. “Nothing. Just wondering what’s circling through that head of yours. How hot and bothered I can get you before you crack.” “You are intentionally taunting me.” “I know,” he whispered as the sex got hotter. He kept going harder and harder, more and more intense until he lost control and collapsed in her arms. “You need to rest.” “I’m fine,” he said. “No you aren’t. You were just shot Jackson.” He kissed her and she slid him to his back.

“You taking advantage of me now,” Jackson asked. “You have no idea,” she said as she slid on top of him. Emily was doing the one thing she couldn’t do in her life. In her career, she was never in charge. She wasn’t allowed to be. Now, at that moment as she sat astride of the man that made her feel like a woman again, she took advantage of him not having an ounce of energy left. She kissed down his chest. “I’m changing this before I leave this room.” “And how are you gonna leave if you can’t walk?” She got a silly grin. She shook her head and rode him like a horse on a 5 day ride. Until she felt him collapse, she wasn’t stopping. She kept going. Taunting him. Teasing. Waking up every inch of him. Finally, he pulled her to him and pinned her to the bed. “Now if you’ve had quite enough of all that taunting,” he said as he leaned in and devoured her lips again. “And what do you have planned,” she asked. He kissed her neck and worked his way down her torso again, opting to tease and taunt. “Jackson,” she said as he reached her inner thigh. “What?” “What are you up to?” With a flick of his finger, her body was throbbing. “Nothing.” “You keep that up and we’re gonna have serious problems.” “And why’s that doctor Emily?” “I may never make it back to the ER.” “Bed rest will never have the same meaning will it,” he teased as she squirmed beneath him.

“You have no idea,” she said. Just as he was about to make it even harder for her to even move, her beeper went off. She grabbed it and saw an emergency. “I have to go.” Jackson shook his hand. “Trust me. If it were optional, I’d be here.” She went to get up and he teased and taunted faster and faster until she practically exploded. “Oh my god,” she said. “You’re gonna be late,” he teased. She got up and barely managed to stand. She slid into her scrubs without the bra or the lacy panties. “You’re forgetting something,” Jackson said. “Souvenir,” she joked. She took off and even with her wobbly legs, made her way to the ER and into a 2-hour surgery. When she made it out, she was beyond exhausted. She had a quick 45-minute nap in the on-call room and when she made it back to the floor that Jackson and Jamie were on, people were there. She went into Jamie’s room.

“I gather we’re feeling better. You gave me one hell of a scare yesterday Mr. Hastings,” Emily said. “How’s Jackson?” “Fine. I may keep him. He wasn’t doing well last night,” Emily said trying her best to hide the grin she now had from the previous night. “Am I alright to go home?” “Who’s Piper?” “My wife. I was supposed to go to see her last night when all of this happened. They just told her. She’s gonna want to take me home.” “As long as she’s there with you, fine. Anything happens, you are back here. That’s the deal.” “Can I get out of this stupid bed then?” Emily nodded. “Just get dressed and when she gets here, I’ll talk to her. You need to keep that sling on until you heal.” “Yes doctor,” Jamie replied. She unhooked him from the IV and left the room so he could get changed.

She handed off the orders to the nurse and saw security outside Jackson’s room. She went in to look in on him and the nurse was changing his bandage. “Did you go popping a stitch?” “No idea. I was kinda tossing and turning last night,” Jackson said staring at her. Her bra and panties were under his pillow. He knew it and so did she. “How are we feeling,” Emily said trying to stay professional.” “For now, good. Just sore.” “I may have to keep you tonight just to make sure that everything is stable.” “Yes doctor,” Jackson said coyly. “He’s had breakfast and polished off two jugs of water since last night. I’d assume that’s good.” “Just to be on the safe side,” Emily said. As soon as the nurse left the room, Jackson got a grin ear to ear. “Stop.” “That mean I’m not sleeping tonight either,” he joked. “Don’t count on it.” “You still on tonight?” Emily shook her head. “No disruptions.” “Good. I’m thinking I may need the bigger bed if I’m having company,” he teased. “I need my things.” “Mine,” Jackson teased. “Behave.” “Never Doctor Emily,” Jackson said as he stared a hole through her like he had x-ray vision. “Jackson.” “You want them, come and get them yourself,” he teased quietly. She shook her head. “I need them.” “You know what I need.” She looked at him. Just as she was about to make a move to get them, the door opened.

“Thank god you’re alright,” Jamie said. “What are you doing up,” Jackson asked. “Coming to check on you,” Jamie said as the door flung open. “Jamie,” Piper said as she ran into the room and into Jamie’s arms. “Hey wife,” he teased. “What happened,” Piper asked. “We’re fine. Doesn’t matter,” Jackson replied. Emily slid out of the room and went and checked on her other patients. Every time she walked, she could still feel him. It’s like she was having flashbacks all day. When Jamie and his wife finally left, so did most of the security.

“See you tomorrow boss,” the nurses said as they clocked out. “Monday. I’m off for a few days.” “Have a good one,” her favorite nurse said as she left. Emily went back down to the ER to work on the incoming traumas. She was practically run off her feet all afternoon. The only thing that snapped her out of her post Jackson haze was a message from the nurses station outside Jackson’s room that he needed some pain relief. She made her way upstairs and walked into his room, closing and locking it behind her.

“What’s this I hear about pain relief,” Emily asked. “You were saying before Jamie came?” “I didn’t say a word.” “Something you wanted back?” “Jackson.” “What are you doing this week?” “I’m working.” “When are you back to the hospital?” “Monday.” “Good.” “Why?” “Because my weekend plans consist of getting to know every inch of you.” “That was last night,” she said. “That was the appetizer.” “So, if I let you check out?” “You won’t need a change of clothes. Leave it at that,” he said as she felt the temperature shoot up again. “That would be a date.” Jackson gave her a look. She headed out, unlocking the door and asking for him to have a bigger bed and went back to the ER for a trauma.
