“I’ve upheld my part of the deal, and now it is time for you to pay up.”
Snoe kept his composure. He knew the day would come and was surprised it hadn’t been the day he’d killed Hilde. Snoe had always been ready to pay the price, but now he had so much more, he wasn’t ready to let his soul go just yet. As if the demon lord could hear his very thoughts, his lips dipped down in a frown.
“You wouldn’t dare cheat me out of our contract?”
Snoe licked his lips and pushed down the inkling of fear that tried to seize his lungs. No, he wouldn’t cheat Ezyrah out of his soul. He would give it to him willingly, but Snoe wanted to stay alive a little bit longer. He wanted to be with his men, to bask in the glory and victory he’d worked so hard for.
“My soul is yours. I wouldn’t dare dream of backing out of that,” Snoe said. He leaned toward Ezyrah, playing with the strange intimacy they had. “But it would be a shame to end this so quickly. I have an entire nation with as many souls as you want, and we can continue this.”
Ezyrah studied him, and Snoe was unable to meet his eyes. It was like looking into a bottomless pit and feeling as if he was falling into it.
“You want to stay with your mutts,” Ezyrah said.
It wasn’t a lie—he did. Snoe had found himself in love with them. They were supposed to be just something to help him get his vengeance, but somewhere along the way, Smooth’s words wormed their way into his heart; Gunner’s grumpy exterior became an expression Snoe associated with love; Wolly’s crazy antics grasped at the strings of his heart; Dox’s constant support became his backbone; Nyght’s affection became something he couldn’t live without; Joker’s smile lit up his world; and Blade’s overprotectiveness became standard.
They were everything to Snoe. He used to think that he was their everything, but somewhere along the way, things had changed a little, and they’d become his everything. He glanced up at Ezyrah. As strange as their relationship was, he couldn’t fathom the idea of never having Ezyrah either.
“Yes, and it’s because of you,” Snoe said, deciding to go with honesty. He’d planned to try trickery, but in the end, he couldn’t.
Ezyrah tilted his head, and his silky pitch-black hair fell to the side. Snoe’s hand itched to run his fingers through it. Fuck it. If it was going to be his last day alive, he wanted to touch the man before him one last time. He raised his fingers ever so slowly, waiting for Ezyrah to stop him.
The demon lord didn’t, and Snoe let his fingers run through the softest hair he’d ever touched.
“Very well, little witch. We shall strike up another deal,” Ezyrah said. He gave Snoe a toothy grin. “You will continue to provide souls to me. In exchange, you will keep your life until you can no longer provide.”
Snoe nodded. “Okay, souls are covered, but what about this?” he asked, pointing between Ezyrah and himself.
“You play with fire,” Ezyrah said.
Snoe shrugged. “What can I say? I enjoy being warm.”
Ezyrah chuckled in that weird demon way that felt evil and kind of wrong but right at the same time. Snoe was happy with the deal.
Before Ezyrah vanished, he leaned in and kissed Snoe. “You did good to destroy the mirror.”
It wasn’t a direct thank you, but Snoe took it as one anyway. “You’re welcome.”
There was a knock on the door before Parkins entered. Snoe fixed his suit once more and gave the elder a smile.
“Are you ready?”
Snoe was ready to say yes, but instead, he turned to his men. He looked into each one of their eyes. “I love all of you.”
Dox was the first to pull Snoe in for a kiss.
“We are not sure of the word ‘love’; as far as we know, no demon has really felt it. But we all talked about it, and we are sure that we have fallen in love with you as well. It’s just another thing you have gifted us.”
Snoe was taken back by the words. Each one of them pulled him in for a kiss. By the end of it, Snoe wasn’t up for going out and speaking to the people. He’d much rather stay inside and have his way with the men he loved.
Parkins cleared his throat, reminding Snoe they weren’t alone.
“Everyone ready out there?”
Parkins bowed. “Yes, they are ready for the new leader of the Whyte coven.”
Snoe laughed. “I’m sure they aren’t, but all the same. Today is the day I become king.”
And they lived happily ever after.
