Bane's Heart (A World Beyond #9)(58)
Author: Michelle Howard

Bane snarled and pulled at the strands of her hair. The stinging sensation in her scalp fueled her desire. She licked all around until she was back at the top and carefully lapped the drips leaking. Humming under her breath, she mouthed the rounded end and swallowed as much as she could until the tip tapped her throat.

Panting breaths from above had her lifting her gaze to see Bane watching her intently. Fierce determination was stamped across his features. His face suffused with color and an overwhelming wave of power cascade over her.

There was no way he could let Mischka finish sucking his cock to completion. They were in a room without a lock on the door and anyone could come in. He lowered his head and was confronted with the sight of her lips parted wide and his shaft disappearing in the wet depths. She was drawing him in deep, her tongue stroking and feathering his length as she used her hand to pull him in and out.

The sounds she made—desperate moans mixed with hungry whimpers—had him growing harder than he could recall and filled with an indefinable need.

Knowing he was close to releasing down her tight throat, he grabbed her by the shoulders with one hand and grasped his cock with the other. He grimaced as he slid out in protest. When she stared at him in dazed puzzlement, he tucked himself away and helped her to her feet.

Her lips were swollen from her efforts and her expression revealed she was lost to the pleasure she had been giving him. There was a flash of confusion followed by hurt when her gaze cleared. His heart jumped and Bane wrapped his arms around her, squeezing in appreciation. “It’s not what you think. You have no idea how much I wanted you to continue.”

There was a brisk knock at the door as it opened on a swish. Bane tensed and turned, his body angled slightly in front of Mischka.

Chapter 30

Mischka frowned when Bane stopped her from giving him a release. Sucking a male’s cock was a skill she knew she’d mastered, so it was hard to understand why he didn’t let her finish. He helped her to her feet and she mentally castigated herself. Maybe he didn’t want her this way anymore. Was this all a plan to hurt her back because she’d hurt him?

Bane pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly. “It’s not what you think. You have no idea how much I wanted you to continue.”

Mischka shuddered in relief and fought to calm the jagged beat of her heart from fear of rejection. Bane was honest. The more she thought on it, she knew he wouldn’t play a vicious game like that. Only Lothar and his ilk would do such. Mischka was about to encourage him to let her finish where she’d left off when someone knocked on the door then opened it.

One of the medic assistants Mischka had become familiar with during her stay entered with a chipper grin. Mischka’s mouth twisted. She wondered if she’d been that annoying to patients. Bane’s snort had her turning to watch him from the corner of her eyes.

He didn’t wipe the smirk from his face and she narrowed her gaze and tried to figure out what he found so funny but had the feeling it came pretty close to her own thoughts.

Mischka ran a hand through her hair and the loose waves reminded her she hadn’t worn it up one single time after everything fell apart on CV-8. She twisted the length into a familiar knot, taking comfort in the routine gesture. “It’s fine, Bane.”

He cupped her chin and studied her expression as if seeking the truth. Mischka didn’t look away, letting him see she meant it. “Are you ready to leave?”

This was the end of her stay in the medic center. Now that Dr. Maku had cleared her health, she had no reason to stay. Hiding the hint of nerves which had her stomach in flutters, Mischka nodded. “Yes. Although don’t expect me to be excited about returning to that small cell.”

Anger flared, wiping out the soft look in his eyes. “You’re not going back there.”

Mischka shook her head, confused by his sudden mood change. She reached for the bag she’d packed containing a few toiletry items gifted from the staff, but Bane took it from her and grasped her hand with the other. Since she didn’t know what to say, she followed him and held her silence through the halls. She didn’t say a word as he helped her into a waiting hover-car either. It was easy enough to keep quiet as he drove with skill through traffic.

What wasn’t easy was ignoring the simmering heat gathering between them in the vehicle. Mischka was putting all her faith in Bane when he said he cared for her. It required a leap of trust and courage she’d never before extended to another.

The possibility of having it snatched away before she fully grasped it scared her so much she’d made herself sick the first time he’d left her alone in the medic center, finally giving in to the doctor’s demands to leave her and rest.

His absence had been a gnawing ache in the deep recesses of her soul until he’d returned bright and early the next morning. After repeated vows from the staff that she was no longer in any danger, he went home every night.

Each time he returned the next day, a bit of her fear that he didn’t mean what he said when she awakened receded. In its place was a growing desire to close the physical distance he maintained as he sat in the chair by her bed.

So lost in her thoughts, Mischka didn’t realize the hover-car had come to a stop and they were in front of a four story building with expansive grounds. She glanced around and took in the remote location. It looked like the middle of nowhere with no signs of traffic or any other life. “Where are we?”

“My home.” Bane got out of the car after the announcement and came around to her side to get the door.

Her instincts hummed like a live wire as he studied her through the open frame. She held on to his fingers as he helped her out. “Your home?”

He couldn’t possibly mean what she thought. He’d brought her to the Jutak warrior base?

“Mmm.” He placed a hand at her lower back and guided her forward.

He keyed in a code at a box located to the side of the glass door and Mischka caught sight of the mounted cameras. She walked inside marveling at the spacious white interior. The high ceilings, the sleek furnishings and the brilliant tile as their feet traversed the lobby.

“How many live here with you?”

Bane glanced down at her with a half-smile. “This was originally to be a main headquarters for several Units starting with Torkel’s team. After a series of attacks during our early years living here, Torkel decided it was too high risk to have multiple Units under one roof. It would draw too much attention to one place, especially once the Chosens and children came. He convinced our Commander it should serve as a residence for our families only. So fifteen team members, eight Chosens, and five little ones.”

The way he casually shared information about himself with her was never going to cease to amaze Mischka. They bypassed the shining doors of a lift and Bane opened a secured door, revealing stairs going up toward the next floor. Mischka’s mind flew over what he’d disclosed. Lothar would never let a potential enemy through his front doors. “You trust me enough to bring me to your home? Is...Torkel in agreement with this?”

She couldn’t imagine his Unit Leader had approved this. Bane stopped her before she could mount the first step. His thumb smudged her chin before he settled his forehead on hers. “Mischka, you are not the enemy. I need you to believe that if you’re going to be staying here.”
