“Let’s do it. It will take time for my house to sell anyway.”

“We’ll leave early tomorrow then,” I said taking in a mouthful of wine. I’m so dead. I thought as I stared at her.

“Thank you for tonight,” she said as she was walking me to the front door.

“Anytime.” I turned to face her before stepping over the threshold.

I couldn’t control myself as I pulled her into me and kissed her.

“Goodnight, Kass,” I said walking away to my rental car.

I got back to the inn and packed my stuff back up. I knew things were going to end badly. There was no other way around it.

Chapter Five

Kassandra

“Are you kidding me? You are just going to leave?” Lela asked me as I packed my bag later that night.

“I’m not just ‘leaving’.”

“Then what would you call it?” she huffed.

“I call it, being productive and not sitting around here waiting for something to happen.” I turned to face her tossing a couple of tank tops into the bag.

“Besides, didn’t you say that you were going back home?”

She opened her mouth to rebut, but nothing came out.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

I tossed the rest of my stuff into a bag and headed downstairs.

“Lock up when you leave, will ya?” I walked out the front door just as Theo was pulling up.

“Nice car. Did you steal it?” I asked pulling open the door on the new sedan that he clearly rented.

“Funny. We’ll get a better car if you want.”

I shook my head. “Better to have a car that fits in than one that stands out.”

He nodded.

We pulled away from the house, and I looked back just in time to see Lela standing outside with her arms across her chest.

“Wait. Go back.” I sighed.

“Wow. You were in the car with me for what? Five seconds?” he said as he made a quick U-turn in the street and pulled back in the driveway.

“Come with us,” I said stepping out of the car.

“What?” she hissed.

“Get your stuff, lock the house, and come with us.”

I could see the smile across her face as she bolted into the house.

“You good with that?” I asked as I got back into the car.

He shrugged. “Your road trip. I’m just here to drive.”

LELA GOT INTO THE CAR and we were once again, on the road. To where? Who the hell knew, but I was determined to figure out what this growing tattoo was.

“Do you really think dad might have the answers?” she asked as we drove almost in silence down the highway. The sun was starting to set, and it was blinding me through the car.

“I hope so. If not, I guess we are on our own.”

“You mean you are on your own. I don’t have a tattoo.”

I scoffed. “Not yet.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Well I mean who’s to say you won’t get one? Or maybe yours is just invisible.”

“Or maybe I’m just normal.”

Theo laughed.

“What?” we said at the same time.

“You two? Normal? That’s a word that doesn’t even belong in your vocabulary.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I huffed.

“I’m just saying. You two are witches. You are far from normal. Your mother dies, and you get some magical tattoo, and you both inherit a house neither of you really wants. Normal isn’t in that at all.”

I shook my head and looked back at Lela. She smirked.

“He kind of does have a point.”

“Yeah okay.” I turned back around in my seat and stared at the road the best I could. I glanced down at the piece of paper in my hands with an address on it. I hoped our dad was still there, but I wasn’t sure if he would even know who we were.

“WHY DID YOU PULL OFF the highway?” I asked as he drove down the exit ramp.

“Because I need some sleep and so do you.”

I nodded. Now that he mentioned it, I was exhausted. My eyes were hurting. I looked back and saw that Lela was spread out in the backseat.

“Well she clearly has no issues sleeping in a car.” I sighed.

“Yeah well you were in and out for a bit.”

I shrugged. “Really? I don’t even remember that.”

“Yep. Ah a motel.”

“Motel?” I shook my head.

“There is a fancy hotel right down the road.” I pointed.

“Why do we need fancy? We are only spending the night.”

I looked at him.

“Fine.” He huffed as he kept driving to the hotel. It’s not that I didn’t trust a motel, but I knew Lela and she wouldn’t be caught dead in one.

We checked into two rooms.

“Night,” he said standing outside our door.”

“Night,” Lela yawned and walked into the room.

“I get the bed closest to the window!” she called from behind me.

“I should probably go.”

He nodded but didn’t move.

“Goodnight, Theo.” I wanted to pull him into a kiss. To feel him close and on me.

I fought the urge and backed into the room and shut the door, leaning my body against it.

I walked over and tossed my stuff on the floor before falling into one of the beds. I didn’t even feel like moving the covers on top of me.

“He totally has the hots for you,” Lela noted in a sleepy voice.

“What are you talking about?”

“Theo. You can’t see it? I bet you he wished that he was in here with you and not me.”

I laughed. “Go to bed.”

I rolled over and the only thing on my mind was Theo.

Stop, Kass. You need sleep, and he’s a demon. I said to myself as I let my eyes close and my body relax.

I got up the next morning and immediately got into the shower. If I didn’t go first, Lela would, and she took forever.

“Can you get that?” I asked Lela about the knocking on the door as I walked out of the bathroom in a towel.

“I’ve got to shower!” she exclaimed jumping up and running into the bathroom.

I groaned as I walked to the door and pulled it open.

Theo stood on the other side.

I watched his eyes go up my body and stop.

“Theo.” I snapped my fingers.

“Can I borrow your balcony?” he asked walking into the room.

“Sure, come on in.” I sighed shutting the door behind him.

“What’s wrong with yours?”

“It faces the main street.

“And your point?”

“I need one that faces the pond.” He said pulling the curtains open and walking out onto the balcony.

“What the hell do you need this for?”

He held up a piece of paper.

“You’ve lost me.”

“We have to cover our tracks. We can’t let people know we are here.”

“And burning a piece of paper will do that?”

“No, you should have a spell.”

I sighed and walked back into my room. I grabbed one of my mom’s books.
